Bosbranden teisteren Canada, Grand Prix nog niet in gevaar

De Formule 1-wereld geniet momenteel van een week zonder raceverplichtingen. Over anderhalve week gaat het seizoen dan weer verder met de Canadese Grand Prix in Montreal. De regio wordt momenteel echter getroffen door hevige bosbranden en de gevolgen daarvan, het lijkt nog geen gevolgen te hebben voor de Grand Prix.

Canada wordt momenteel zwaar getroffen door ernstige bosbranden. In de provincie Quebec woeden zo'n 160 bosbranden en volgens de lokale overheid is een deel van die branden nog niet onder controle. De branden zorgen voor een grote hoeveelheid rook en dat zorgt weer voor andere problemen. Door de slechte luchtkwaliteit zijn er op veel plekken gezondheidswaarschuwingen afgegeven. De rookwolken hangen dan ook boven veel steden.

Ook boven de stad Montreal hangen er rookwolken. Over anderhalve week begint het raceweekend daar met de eerste vrije trainingen. Op zondag 18 juni staat de Grand Prix op het programma op het Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Of de huidige situaties gevolgen gaan hebben voor de Grand Prix, is nog niet duidelijk. In de komende dagen wordt er wel neerslag verwacht in Montreal. Het is dan ook de verwachting dat de bosbranden voorlopig geen problemen gaan opleveren voor het Grand Prix-weekend.

      ...en de afstanden zijn hier wat groter. De provincie is zo groot als west europa. (UK, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Spanje). Het kan dus veilig zijn in Montreal.

      Het is verder inderdaad dat de luchtkwaliteit minder kan zijn. Als je buiten bent ruikt het alsof er iemand aan het BBQen is.

    Vier dagen geleden in het nieuws...

    Canada heeft te maken met een buitengewoon hevig natuurbrandenseizoen. De bosbranden woeden verspreid over heel Canada, in zeven provincies en een van de drie territoria, en zijn veel groter dan normaal. Zo'n 30.000 mensen hebben hun huis moeten verlaten.

    Gisteren ging het om 214 branden, waarvan er 93 nog niet onder controle zijn. Zowel het aantal branden als de omvang van verbrand gebied is bovengemiddeld groot voor deze tijd van het jaar. Volgens het laatste rapport van de Canadese overheid is er bijna twaalf keer zoveel grond verbrand als gemiddeld. Ruim 27.000 vierkante kilometer is tot nu toe verwoest, een gebied bijna zo groot als België.

    Volgens bosbrand-expert Christie Tucker van de provincie Alberta, waar sinds begin vorige maand de noodtoestand geldt, is de hoeveelheid verbrand bos dit jaar significant groter dan de afgelopen vijf jaar. Ruim 300 brandweerlieden uit de VS en Zuid-Afrika helpen bij het bestrijden van de branden.

      Bosbranden De rook die is overgewaaid van bosbranden in Canada heeft de lucht in het noordoosten van de Verenigde Staten zeer vervuild. Inwoners wordt geadviseerd zo veel mogelijk binnen te blijven.

    Ik woon zelf een uurtje rijden west van Toronto, sinds gister kunnen we de brand lucht hier in het zuiden van Ontario ruiken en is de lucht kwaliteit erg slecht, worden al sport evenementen afgelast voor de komende dagen. Al een paar weken geen regen en heerlijk warm weer, maar ziet er naar uit dat er zondag/maandag al weer wat regen komt, ook kouder weer volgende week, dus komt helemaal goed voor race in Montreal!
