Newey was geen fan van 2022-regels: "Dacht dat alle auto's hetzelfde zouden worden"

Het team van Red Bull Racing kan dit jaar voor het tweede seizoen op rij constructeurskampioen worden. De Oostenrijkse renstal heerst in de Formule 1 sinds er vorig jaar nieuwe technische reglementen in zijn gegaan. In eerste instantie was Red Bull-ontwerper Adrian Newey hier niet zo blij mee omdat hij vreesde dat alle auto's op elkaar zouden gaan lijken.

In 2022 gingen er nieuwe technische regels gelden in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Het resultaat was dat de wagens er compleet anders uitzagen dan in de voorgaande jaren. Red Bull had de nieuwe regels het beste onder de knie en werden in 2022 met overmacht wereldkampioen met Max Verstappen. Ook de constructeurstitel ging naar de Oostenrijkse renstal.

Red Bulls topontwerper Adrian Newey was in eerste instantie geen grote fan van de nieuwe regels. De Britse ontwerper zag veel nadelen en vreesde voor een soort eenheidsworst. In gesprek met Sky Sports legt hij het uit: "Ik moet eerlijk toegeven dat toen de regels in 2020 naar buiten kwamen, ze er heel streng uitzagen. Ik was bang dat alle auto's er hetzelfde uit zouden gaan zien. Het gaf rust toen bleek dat veel teams er zo over dachten."

Sidepods

De vrees van Newey bleek ongegrond, want de wagens zagen er allemaal anders uit. Veel teams hadden voor een andere strategie gekozen. Newey zag dat één bepaald onderdeel het verschil maakte: "Vooral bij de vorm van de sidepods zag je veel variatie. Je hebt aan het begin niet alleen resources als we bezig zijn met een auto. Vrij vroeg in het proces kies je voor een richting en ga je aan de slag."

Gaat alsnog gebeuren richting 2026

Het was even afwachten tot bleek welk concept het meeste potentie had en dat bleek die van Adrain zelf.

  Uiteraard, maar de genialiteit van RBR (hoe de auto is opgebouwd) word niet geëvenaard door andere teams denk ik..

  Je zal altijd vatiatie hebben. Zelfde als ene coureur fijne vindt met onderstuur te tijden en andere met overstuur.
  Als je op aero wat achter loopt halen ze dat weer in via de rijder of motor.
  Onder de streep luggen ze gelijk.
  Want 2021 zat rbr bobenop mercedes. 2026 zit de rest bovenop rbr. Gaten worden kleiner. Mercedes had geluk met de 1.6 v6 dat ze het geweldig voor elkaar hadden. Nu de aero en rest bij rbr beter
