Red Bull verwacht dat nieuwe banden 'bescheiden' impact zullen hebben

Bandenleverancier Pirelli introduceert in Groot-Brittannië een nieuwe bandencompound. Deze banden zijn ontwikkeld omdat Pirelli merkte dat het downforceniveau van de auto's dit jaar omhoog is gegaan. Men wilde problemen voorkomen en introduceert daarom de nieuwe banden. Bij Red Bull Racing verwachten ze een bescheiden impact.

Pirelli heeft nieuwe stevigere compounds gemaakt die tijdens het Britse Grand Prix-weekend voor het eerst echt worden gebruikt. De teams mochten anderhalve week geleden in Spanje al eventjes testen met de banden. Tijdens de vrije trainingen konden de teams met het prototype van de C1-compound testen. Er werden echter geen runs afgewerkt op de testbanden, maar de teams konden wel een beetje data verzamelen.

Metingen

Ook bij het team van Red Bull Racing hebben het ze één en ander geleerd over de banden. Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan legt aan Motorsport.com uit dan men een paar dingetjes heeft geleerd: "Ik ga niet verklappen wat wij hieruit hebben afgeleid. Weinig mensen konden in de eerste vrije training onder normale omstandigheden rijden. We hebben wel allemaal metingen gedaan en nu komt het aan op Silverstone."

Impact

Monaghan geeft wel aan dat hij niet verwacht dan Red Bull de auto moet aanpassen vanwege de nieuwe structuur van de band. Hij is daar nogal duidelijk over: "Er is wel een impact. Of we iets moeten aanpassen? Ik denk dat we wel goed zitten voor nu. De vuurproef zullen de vrijdag, de zaterdag of de zondag op Silverstone zijn. Ik weet dat mensen drukmeters achter de voorwielen hadden geplaatst. Dat is voor sommigen een ander niveau van voorbereiden. Ik zou zeggen dat het een bescheiden impact heeft, maar ik kan mijn ongelijk krijgen in Silverstone."

Concurrent Aston Martin heeft volgens diens performance director Tom McCullough nuttige informatie verzameld om goed voorbereid te zijn voor de Britse Grand Prix.
"We hebben veel gegevens verzameld door de metingen. We zullen deze data verwerken en er hopelijk sterker bij staan op Silverstone", zegt McCullough.
"Er waren geen enorme verschillen, maar we hebben geen goede runs gedaan met veel brandstof in de tank, dankzij alle andere dingen die we wilden bereiken. Het was meer een datagedreven oefening voor ons."

Ferrari-teambaas Frederic Vasseur was iets sceptischer over wat zijn team over de nieuwe band heeft geleerd.
"Het is niet makkelijk om een duidelijk beeld te scheppen als je maar vijf ronden op een prototypeband hebt gereden", legt de Fransman uit.
"We hebben duizenden ronden op de huidige banden gereden en we begrijpen deze nog steeds niet! Vraag me dus niet om de nieuwe compound binnen vijf ronden te begrijpen."

Pirelli F1-baas Mario Isola verwacht niet dat de nieuwe bandenconstructie merkbare gevolgen zal hebben.
"Sommige teams gebruikten de prototypeband om de C1 te begrijpen. De constructie maakt dus niet echt een verschil. Alpine gebruikte als enige de basis, de normale constructie, de andere teams gebruikten de prototypeband. Maar Barcelona is bekend terrein en ze weten of de banden zich gedragen zoals het hoort of niet. Ik heb gesproken met teams, maar er waren geen specifieke opmerkingen of problemen."
