Wat viel op tijdens de Grand Prix van Canada?

De Canadese Grand Prix was gisteren een zeer interessante race. De zege ging, zoals verwacht, naar Max Verstappen en hij bereikte met die zege twee enorme mijlpalen. Er gebeurde zeer veel in de redelijk rommelige Grand Prix, GPToday.net zet een aantal van deze zaken op een rijtje.

Verstappen

Wie wil terugblikken op de Canadese Grand Prix, kan niet om Max Verstappen en Red Bull Racing heen. Verstappen leidde de race van start tot finish en evenaarde het aantal zeges van de legendarische Ayrton Senna. Zijn zege was ook de honderdste voor het team van Red Bull. Het onderstreepte de enorme overmacht van de Oostenrijkse renstal, de laatste niet Red Bull-coureur die een race wist te winnen was George Russell in Brazilië vorig jaar. Het gat met de nummer twee was gisteren in Canada net geen tien seconden, maar alsnog kwam de zege van Verstappen niet in gevaar. De wereldtitel lijkt hem nu al niet meer te kunnen ontgaan.

Albon

Verstappen was zeker niet de enige die veel indruk maakte in Canada. De meest opvallende naam in de punten was namelijk die van Alexander Albon. De Thaise Williams-coureur kwam als zevende over de lijn nadat hij ook een zeer sterke kwalificatie had gereden. Hij startte de race in de top tien en eigenlijk had niemand verwacht dat hij zijn positie kon handhaven. Dat deed hij dus wel, ook nog eens op een extreem indrukwekkende manier. Hij vocht met de grote jongens en veroorzaakte uiteindelijk een DRS-treintje. Niemand kon hem inhalen en de vreugdekreet van Albon was dan ook meer dan terecht.

Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton eindigde dit weekend voor de tweede race op rij op het podium. In Canada kwam hij als derde over de streep, hij probeerde Fernando Alonso nog uit te dagen voor de tweede plek, maar dat was teveel gevraagd. Hamilton en Alonso kwamen elkaar ook meerdere keren tegen. Bij de eerste reeks pitstops werd Hamilton de fastlane ingestuurd en daarbij raakte hij bijna Alonso. De stewards keken ernaar, maar opvallend genoeg volgde er geen straf. Na afloop was het geen punt van gesprek meer, maar een tijdstraf schoot bij sommigen wel door het hoofd. De podiumplek was daarnaast wel verdient, Hamilton reed verder foutloos.

Wat viel nog meer op: Russell met een domme fout waarvan ik nooit had verwacht dat hij nog kon doorgaan (niet tot het einde maargoed).
Stroll die vlak voor de finish vlag nog Bottas voorbij ging, zeer matig weekend van Stroll maar een geweldige keuze van het team voor de undercut.
De Vries weer zeer matig.
Perez zeer matig in een snelle wagen.

Als Max gestaag in dit tempo blijf winnen is hij voor de laatste 7 races al weredkampioen, helaas voor de andere coureurs wil hij blijven winnen.
