Hamilton onzeker over racetempo: "Mogelijk zijn we derde of vierde snelste"

Lewis Hamilton start als enige Mercedes-coureur in de top tien. De zevenvoudig kampioen werd vijfde in de kwalificatie op de vrijdag, terwijl teamgenoot George Russell niet verder kwam P11. Voor Mercedes nog wat werk aan de winkel.

"Het was een zware sessie vandaag, maar gelukkig zijn we er doorheen gekomen", begon Hamilton na afloop.

Dat Mercedes moeite heeft op de pijlsnelle Red Bull Ring is niet zo gek met maar één zege in de afgelopen vijf edities. "Dit circuit is in het verleden altijd een uitdaging geweest voor onze auto en dat was vandaag weer te zien, dus ik pak P5."

Toch blijft Hamilton positief met het oog op zondag. "Het is een goede, sterke positie om zondag aan de race te beginnen. Ik weet nog niet helemaal zeker waar we precies staan ​​met ons racetempo, mogelijk zijn we derde of vierde snelste."

De Brit gaat zeker niet met de pakken neerzitten. "We zullen van de ene op de andere dag hard werken en zaterdag proberen het beter te doen in de sprintkwalificatie, afhankelijk van de weersomstandigheden en temperaturen", sloot Hamilton strijdvaardig af.

      longrun van Alonso zag er op zijn beurt weer een stuk beter uit dan die van Hamilton. Normaal moet je er al niet teveel waarde aan hechten, nu met 1 korte training en ook een sprintrace voor de boeg (lichtere auto's) heb je al helemaal geen idee waar teams precies mee bezig zijn en welk deel van de race ze aan het simuleren zijn.

      Verstappen was zelfs ronduit slecht tijdens de long run simulatie. Maar Leclerc zag er redelijk uit op rood. Veel sneller dan enig ander en buiten wat vreemde rondes tussendoor redelijk constant. Wel wat oplopend, maar niet al te veel.

    Russell liet zien dat de nieuwe Mercedes zeker nog geen wonder auto is.
    Daarnaast had Lewis geluk (reed ook sterk natuurlijk) dat AM en Perez liepen te stuntelen anders had het er nog slechter uitgezien.
    Sowieso was Alonso alleen maar bezig met de zondag afstelling en het lijkt er op dat hij echt voor de race gaat en de kwali bewust liet lopen. Dat verklaart ook het feit dat Lance ervoor stond.
    Het zal dus een moeilijke zondag gaan worden voor Mercedes en hun grootste succes mogelijkheid ligt misschien wel vandaag te wachten.

    Forget it, rbr heeft een mega voorsprong mogen opbouwen en tot 2026 niet meer in te halen door engine freeze en budget cap.
