Gasly bezorgd over sterk presterende McLaren, maar is hoopvol gestemd over aankomend upgradepakket

Pierre Gasly was een van de coureurs die graag wat meer uit het raceweekend in Spielberg had kunnen halen. De Fransman wist kampioenschapspunten te scoren, maar zag tegelijkertijd McLaren-coureur Lando Norris in zowel de kwalificaties als de races sterk presteren. Gasly meent dat zijn team de opkomst van McLaren als motivatie moet gebruiken om dichter bij de topteams te komen.

Het Formule 1-team van Alpine kende een tegenvallende start van het 2023-seizoen, maar is sindsdien langzaam maar zeker aan een opmars bezig om kleine stapjes naar boven te zetten. Esteban Ocon wist bij de Monaco Grand Prix een derde finishplaats te behalen, en de daaropvolgende race in Spanje kon teamgenoot Pierre Gasly een vierde startplaats pakken, alvorens hij dankzij het blokkeren van Sainz en Verstappen een gridstraf van zes plaatsen op z'n broek kreeg.

De positieve signalen heeft het F1-team van Alpine wel degelijk kunnen zien, maar tijdens de meest recentelijke Grands Prix, zowel die van Canada als Oostenrijk, wisten Aston Martin, Ferrari en Mercedes juist weer sterker te presteren. Bovendien had McLaren-coureur Lando Norris een optimaal raceweekend in Spielberg – een ontwikkeling die Gasly naar eigen zeggen wat zorgen baart.

"Er zijn zeker wel wat positieve punten te vinden", begint Gasly over het Oostenrijkse weekend. "We hebben volgens mij de race gemaximaliseerd en het maximaal haalbare resultaat behaald. Aan de andere kant voelt het alsof we meer hadden kunnen krijgen, en we willen natuurlijk dichter bij die top vijf komen."

"Momenteel missen we nog net die twee of drie tienden om met Fernando (Alonso) en Mercedes te vechten, die beiden net voor ons wisten te finishen. We moeten hard blijven werken om het pakket verder te ontwikkelen. McLaren was heel snel dit weekend, en dat is geen goed teken voor ons, maar aan de andere kant zou het ons moeten motiveren. Het laat zien dat het mogelijk is om grote stappen voorwaarts te maken. Het ligt in onze handen, en ik weet dat we de aankomende races upgrades gepland hebben, dus ik kijk ernaar uit om die potentie te ontgrendelen."
