Zhou wil niet kijken naar beelden van Silverstone-crash

De Britse Grand Prix van vorig jaar werd opgeschrikt door de ernstige crash van Guanyu Zhou in de eerste ronde. De Chinese coureur schoot ondersteboven de grindbak in en kwam vast te zitten tussen de bandenstapel en een hek. Zhou geeft aan dat hij nu nog steeds niet naar beelden van de crash kan kijken.

Zhou raakte vorig jaar betrokken bij een incident bij de start van de Grand Prix. Hij werd bij het ingaan van de eerste bocht van achteren aangetikt waardoor zijn auto over de kop sloeg. Ondersteboven schoof hij met volle vaart de grindbak in waarna hij over de bandenstapel heen stuiterde. Zijn auto kwam vast te zitten tussen de bandenstapel en een hek. Met behulp van de marshalls en Mercedes-coureur George Russell kon hij ongedeerd uit zijn Alfa Romeo kruipen.

De auto was zwaar beschadigd, maar Zhou zelf had niets. Hij had geen blessures en liep aan het einde van de race alweer door de paddock. Een jaar later kijkt hij in gesprek met de Britse krant The Telegraph terug op de crash: "Ik was volgens mij zelfs op BBC News. Het was groot nieuws, dat weet ik nog wel. Ik heb het zelf nooit teruggekeken. Ik heb het alleen één keer gezien toen ik het medical centre was omdat ik wilde weten wat de oorzaak van mijn koprol was."

Angstaanjagend

Zhou denkt vaak aan het moment terug. Hij weet nog helder voor de geest te halen hoe hij crashte, wat er door zijn hoofd schoot en hoe hij zich voorbereidde op de impact. Hij wil het echter nooit meer zien: "Als ik er nu een foto van zie, dan scroll ik snel door. Het is angstaanjagend om er weer aan te denken, dat wil ik niet. Elke keer als ik dat wel doe, is het heel donker. Je voelde dat er iets niet goed ging zijn. Je denkt dat het je laatste race was."

  @LP; benieuwd wie "1st lap nutcase Lompe George" dit weekend op de korrel heeft, het gaat al een paar weekeinden best redelijk met prinses George. Maar z'n teammaat doet ook rare dingen in z'n thuisrace, wie weet is het besmettelijk. Zou fijn zijn als die 2 een eind uit de buurt van Verstappen zitten bij ingaan van Copse....

  Het probleem bij Copse komt pas later in de race als Max een statement maakt en de Mercedes-boys gaat dubbelen.

  In het beste of grappigste geval gaat het Mercedes-duo elkaar flinke 'kusjes' geven @Beemerdude.
  
  Nou ben ik normaal niet zo van de crashes en het uitvallen want er doen toch al slechts twintig auto's mee, maar voor de ene keer, op deze plek en voor het oog van de Britse tokkie-media en 'fans' zou het wel genieten zijn...
