Wat viel op tijdens de zaterdag in Groot-Brittannië?

Gisteren stonden de derde vrije training en de kwalificatie op het programma. Op het iconische circuit van Silverstone keek men op de pitmuur vooral naar de weerradars. Een regenbui tijdens de kwalificatie kon immers voor een soort tombola zorgen. Er gebeurde veel opvallende dingen en GPToday.net zet er een aantal op een rijtje.

McLaren

Voorafgaand de kwalificatie keek men vooral naar het team van Williams. Alexander Albon eindigde in alle drie de vrije trainingen in de top drie en oogde ook in de kwalificatie zeer snel, hij kwam echter niet veel verder dan de achtste plaats. In de kwalificatie werd de show gestolen door die andere iconische Britse renstal: McLaren. Lando Norris en Oscar Piastri reden allebei met de geüpdatete bolide en het leek erop dat de updates hun werk deden.

Norris en Piastri zagen er zeer snel uit. In het tweede kwalificatiegedeelte konden ze tot ieders verrassing meekomen met mannen zoals Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz. In het allesbeslissende derde gedeelte van de kwalificatie noteerden ze in de slotseconden zelfs paarse sectortijden. Norris liet zijn thuispubliek juichen, maar zijn tijd werd toch nog verbeterd door Verstappen. De tweede en de derde startplaats geven het team veel vertrouwen voor de race van vandaag. Ze kunnen zomaar eens voor een Brits feestje gaan zorgen in Silverstone.

Ferrari

Ferrari-coureurs Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz waren in de Britse kwalificatie even niet elkaars beste vriend. In Q1 gingen ze bij de herstart in formatie de baan op, maar blijkbaar dacht Sainz daar anders over. Leclerc mocht als eerste beginnen aan zijn ronde, maar in de laatste bocht besloot Sainz zijn teamgenoot voorbij te steken. Het zag er nogal kolderiek uit en hij wist nog net op tijd een andere auto te ontwijken.

Leclerc reageerde nogal sarcastisch over de boordradio en noemde het een 'mooie' inhaalactie. Na afloop leek iedereen het moment alweer vergeten te zijn, al gaf Leclerc wel aan dat hij er nog eventjes over wilde babbelen. Ze starten de race van vandaag vanaf de vierde en vijfde plaats en ze zullen dus de aanval moeten gaan openen op de McLarens.

Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez wist ook op het circuit van Silverstone weer niet door te stoten tot Q3. Ditmaal werd hij zelfs op gênante wijze geëlimineerd in het eerste gedeelte van de kwalificatie. Door de diskwalificatie van Valtteri Bottas start Perez de race van vandaag vanaf de vijftiende plek, maar dat is nog steeds ver onder zijn niveau. De Red Bull is de snelste en de betrouwbaarste auto van het veld, maar Perez bereikte al voor de vijfde keer op rij niet Q3. Het moet beter en hij zal zich vandaag moeten bewijzen met een inhaalrace.
