Politie zet gezichtsherkenning in om protesten op Silverstone te voorkomen

De organisatie van de Britse Grand Prix houdt nog steeds stevig rekening met acties van klimaatdemonstranten. Nadat een groepje activisten vorig jaar al plaats nam op het circuit, wil men dat dit jaar voorkomen. De lokale politie gaat ver en zet zelfs gezichtsherkenningstechnologie in rondom het circuit.

Demonstranten van Just Stop Oil zorgden vorig jaar voor een gevaarlijke situatie op het circuit van Silverstone. Tijdens de eerste ronde klommen ze over het hek en namen ze plaats op het asfalt. Aangezien er een code rood was vanwege de crash van Guanyu Zhou werd een levensbedreigende situatie voorkomen. Dit jaar wil de organisatie een soortgelijke actie voorzijn.

Camera's

Meerdere coureurs gaven al aan dat ze achter een veilig vreedzaam protest staan, maar dat het betreden van de baan een no go is. De politie van Northamptonshire neemt verregaande maatregelen. Ze zetten gezichtsherkenningscamera's in die de bezoekers scant en de gezichten vergelijkt met biometrische gegevens van mensen op een volglijst. Gezichten die niet voor een waarschuwing zorgen, worden verwijderd. De politie zet verder ook onder meer zoekteams, agenten in burger, gewapende agenten en nummerplaatherkenning in.

Reactie

Just Stop Oil deelde in aanloop naar de Grand Prix beelden van de actie van vorig jaar. Ze waren blij met de woorden van Lewis Hamilton, de Brit riep op tot vreedzame protesten zonder de baan te betreden. De actiegroep interpreteerde dat iets anders. Ze gaven aan dat Hamilton iets moet doen aan Mercedes-sponsor Petronas en dat sommige 'dappere' individuen hun lichaam op het spel willen zetten voor een betere toekomst.
