Beperkte windtunneltijd nekt Aston Martin in performance

Het team van Aston Martin was de sensatie aan het begin van het seizoen met meerdere podia, waaronder vier derde plekken en twee tweede plaatsen.

Toch lijkt het allemaal moeizamer te gaan voor het roemruchte merk om dezelfde resultaten als begin 2023 te behalen. Aston Performance Director Tom McCullough legt uit waarom: "We wisten duidelijk dat dat eraan zat te komen. Nadat we de kracht van het team in de eerste paar races hadden gezien, wisten we dat we de windtunneltijd gingen verliezen", legt de Britse ingenieur uit.

Toch probeert Aston Martin het maximale eruit te halen. "Alle teams werken altijd aan de operationele efficiëntie in de windtunnel en dat is iets waar we ons op moesten voorbereiden met de manier waarop we de auto in kaart hebben gebracht, ontwikkeld en begrepen.''

Het ontwerp is een succes volgens McCullough, maar de auto kan nog wel op sommige vlakken verbeteren. "Uiteindelijk is het een succes en zou je harder willen gaan, maar we zijn er redelijk goed op voorbereid. Maar je moet ook proberen je goed te kwalificeren en op bepaalde circuits is dat natuurlijk belangrijker dan op andere.''

Echter, Aston Martin heeft daar wel stappen in gemaakt in vergelijking met 2022. "We waren vorig jaar soms een beetje te veel op het racen gericht. En we hebben min of meer bewust geprobeerd om dat een beetje beter in evenwicht te brengen."
