Onbedreigd reed Michael Schumacher aan de leiding bij de zeer natte Grand Prix van België in 1998. De wedstrijd begon met de bizarre startcrash waar dertien coureurs betrokken waren.

Titelconcurrent Mika Hakkinen was uitgeschakeld nadat Johnny Herbert op hem inreed toen de Fin was gespind. Voor Schumacher dus de ideale mogelijkheid om de leiding in het kampioenschap over te nemen.

De Ferrari-coureur had 30 seconden voorsprong op Damon Hill in de Jordan. In ronde 24 van 44 wilde Schumacher de teamgenoot van Hakkinen, David Coulthard, op een ronde zetten.

De Schot kreeg via de teamradio de instructie Schumacher voorbij te laten. Coulthard vertraagde op de hoofdracelijn. Schumacher zag door de spray Coulthard niet, raakte de achterkant van de McLaren en veroorzaakte terminale schade aan zijn Ferrari. Op drie wielen reed Schumacher terug naar de pits en Coulthard deed idem dito.

Schumachers race was over en de Duitser was daar - nog zachtjes gezegd - absoluut niet blij mee. Met stoom uit zijn oren liep Schumacher naar de garage van Coulthard en wilde de Schot fysiek te lijf gaan. Zowel Ferrari -en McLaren-werknemers kwamen tussen beiden.

Een week na de race hadden Schumacher en Coulthard een privé-ontmoeting van anderhalf uur en ze schudden elkaar de hand en beloofden samen te strijden voor duidelijkere richtlijnen bij het ronden en inhalen. Schumacher zei later: "Het is duidelijk dat hij niets verkeerds deed in Spa."

Schuldbewust

In 2003 nam Coulthard de schuld op zich, maar van een bewuste break test wilde hij niks weten.

"Ik ben niet bezig met Fernando-Alonso-praktijken", zei Coulthard. "Maar ik realiseerde me bij nader inzien ... toen Michael tegen de achterkant van me aan reed, was zijn reactie dat ik expres op de rem trapte of probeerde hem te doden en dat soort dingen."

"De stewards keken naar de gegevens en ik had niet geremd, dus het was gewoon allemaal onder het tapijt geveegd."

"De realiteit is dat ik het gas losliet om hem voorbij te laten gaan, maar ik deed dat in zware spray op de racelijn. Je moet nooit dat doen."

"Vanaf het moment dat ik wist dat hij daar was en het team mij vertelde dat hij hem probeerde te laten passeren, had ik een slimmere beslissing moeten nemen", zei Coulthard tot slot.

Wil je even lachen? Weet je wat mijn eerste gedachte was? Daar komt ie!

Na de botsing reed Schumacher op 3 wielen gewoon door, en nog hard ook. Sodeju wat een wagenbeheersing. Als jonge tiener destijds dacht ik; nou ik zou lekker die race uitrijden op 3 wielen. Een Regenmeister blijft immers een Regenmeister! Wel even Hill voorbij laten natuurlijk, maar je mag 2e worden.

Overigens hoorde ik toen vaak mensen zeggen: "hier verloor Schumacher de titel". Weer selectiviteit ten top. Het seizoen ging over 16 races, niet 1. Zo had Hakkinen bijvoorbeeld pech op Imola en Montreal. Maar dat telt dan niet?
Tel je overigens 10 punten bovenop het aantal, dan komt Schumacher nog steeds tekort.

Desalniettemin had Schumacher die dag de overwinning verdiend, en had hij brute pech. Toch was ik als Hill fan enorm blij en ook trots. Winnen in een Jordan. Mega!!!

Deze race zal mij altijd bij blijven. Het was mijn eerste F1-race ooit!

Die startcrash veroorzaakt door Coulthard, ik geloof dat de herstart ruim 2 uur later was rond 16:00 uur. Het was de hele dag grauw, regen, mistig. We stonden bij Pouhon en alle Duitsers stonden hadden alle plekken bezet voor de hekken.

Eddie Irvine crashte de grindbak in voor onze neus, Jos Verstappen kwam met een ratelende Ford-motor langs en zette hem net na Pouhon in het gras en die crash van Schumacher en Coulthard was heel bizar. Dat wiel vloog zo hoog de lucht in dat ik die boven de bomen zag uitkomen, 3 seconden later een driewieler en allemaal scheldende Duitsers.

5 minuten later was 60-70% van het circuit leeg, alle Duitsers vertrokken naar huis!
