Gasly draagt sprintpodium op aan Hubert: "Omstandigheden waren lastig"

De Sprint op het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps werd gekenmerkt door bijzondere momenten en verrassende coureurs. Eén van de grootste verrassingen was Pierre Gasly. De Fransman kwam letterlijk en figuurlijk boven drijven en kwam als derde over de streep. Hij droeg zijn sprintpodium op aan Anthoine Hubert.

Gasly lag na de vroege reeks pitstops plotsklaps op de derde positie. De Fransman wist zich goed te handhaven en was uiteindelijk de jagende Lewis Hamilton te snel af. De Britse Mercedes-coureur kwam in de buurt, maar kwam er op geen enkele manier echt langs. Nadat Hamilton in de laatste rondjes ook nog een tijdstraf kreeg vanwege een incident met Sergio Perez, kwam de derde plaats niet meer in gevaar voor Gasly.

Na afloop van de hectische en vooral kletsnatte Sprint was de vreugde bij Gasly en Alpine groot. Het team heeft bewogen dagen achter de rug en Gasly sprak zich glimlachend uit: "Dit voelt geweldig, ik ben echt enorm trots. Ik ben vooral trots dat het hier op Spa gebeurt, want dit voelt als een soort thuisrace door het wegvallen van Frankrijk. De omstandigheden waren enorm lastig. Ik ben blij, want we stopten op het juiste moment en we konden Lewis achter ons houden. Het voelt speciaal om dit hier te doen, ik denk nu aan Anthoine en ik wil hele team bedanken."

Leuk voor hem en het team. Na twee ramp weekenden is dit een mooie opsteker.
Toch knap hoe hij Lewis achter hem wist te houden.
