Horner mist oude tijden: "Toto en ik zijn soort dinosaurussen"

Christian Horner is al sinds 2005 de teambaas van Red Bull Racing. De Brit heeft in de afgelopen jaren al veel meegemaakt en geldt dan ook als een grote meneer in de sport. Horner voelt zich op zijn plek in de Formule 1, maar ziet wel dat zijn rol in de afgelopen jaren flink is veranderd. Hij ziet zichzelf en Toto Wolff als een soort 'dinosaurussen'.

Horner stond in zijn jaren bij Red Bull aan de wieg van de grote successen. De Brit was relatief jong toen hij de leiding kreeg over de Oostenrijkse renstal, maar veroverde met Sebastian Vettel en Max Verstappen meerdere wereldtitels. Horner is dan ook veel in beeld en hij wordt gezien als een uitgesproken karakter. Op dat punt handelt Horner iets anders dan zijn concullega's, niet alle teambazen zijn immers zo uitgesproken.

Karakters

Horner zelf geeft ook toe dat de rol van teambaas in de afgelopen jaren flink anders is geworden. De Red Bull-teambaas zag vroeger andere figuren en spreekt zich uit in de ESPN-podcast Unlapped: "Toen ik arriveerde in de Formule 1 had je Ron Dennis, Flavio Briatore, Eddie Jordan en Jean Todt. Bernie Ecclestone was de grote baas en ook Max Mosley en Frank Williams waren aanwezig. Het waren grote karakters en persoonlijkheden. Misschien word ik wat ouder, maar je hebt nu vooral meer managers. Het is allemaal technischer geworden."

Dinosaurussen

Horner ziet één andere teambaas die op dezelfde manier te werk gaat. Alhoewel ze soms verbaal met elkaar de strijd aangaan, ziet Horner Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff als een soort bondgenoot: "Ik denk dat Toto en ik meer een soort dinosaurussen zijn in vergelijking met een aantal andere teambazen. Ik ben nog steeds niet de oudste, maar de omschrijving van wat een teambaas is, is anders dan toen ik deze job aannam. Ik denk dat veel van hen nu een technische achtergrond hebben en meer aan de reglementen denken in plaats van aan de business."

Dinosaurussen, dat waren mannen als Ken Tyrell, dan heb je het type 2ehandsautoverkopers gehad zoals Ecclestone en Jordan, en categorie allround gladjanus, daar behoort Horner naar mijn mening toe. Die overleven ook het langst. Wolff is categorie Wolff, uniek in z'n soort. Een ding hebben ze allemaal gemeen: selfmade

Wist je dat Toto Wolff ook een groot gedeelte van zijn carrière aan RedBull verbonden is geweest?
Tijdens zijn race jaren droeg hij veelal RB race overalls en waren zijn racebolides voorzien van de bekende RB stickers.

  Niet met RB sponsoring maar desalniettemin een beestachtige crash. Er zijn zat plekken op de nordschleife waar je er echt niet af wil gaan maar deze staat zeker in de top 3.

AMuS: 'F1 wil DRS afschaffen in kwalificatie, Red Bull dan hardst geraakt'

Red Bull heeft zijn zaakjes met achtervleugel en wanneer deze openklapt,
uitstekend voor elkaar. De topsnelheid van de RB19 is sowieso al goed, maar
als de DRS geactiveerd wordt, dan zijn Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez helemaal niet meer bij te houden.
Mogelijk krijgt de Oostenrijkse renstal een tegenvaller te verwerken, want
de FIA zou overwegen om DRS tijdens de kwalificaties af te schaffen.

In de strijd om pole position wordt ook altijd gebruikgemaakt van DRS, dat is al jaren zo. Maar het doorgaans goed geïnformeerde Auto, Motor und Sport schrijft dinsdag dat de Formule 1 van plan is om DRS alleen toe te staan tijdens races en niet meer op de zaterdagen (of vrijdagen in het geval van een sprintweekend).

Of de Formule 1 hier werk van wil maken om de dominantie van de RB19 in te perken of dat er een andere reden aan ten grondslag ligt, wordt niet genoemd door het Duitse medium.
