Opvallende kritiek voor Ferrari: "Verlies als protagonist, niet in de bijrol"

Het team van Ferrari heeft een enorm tegenvallende eerste seizoenshelft achter de rug. De iconische Italiaanse renstal kan niet meekomen met Red Bull Racing en staat momenteel slechts op de vierde plaats in het constructeurskampioenschap. Luca di Montezemolo is van mening dat Ferrari de hoofdrol moet gaan spelen in de Formule 1.

Ferrari heeft een lastige periode achter de rug. Nadat de Italiaanse renstal eind vorig jaar teambaas Mattia Binotto ontsloeg, zijn de resultaten niet beter geworden. De nieuwe teambaas Frédéric Vasseur probeert het team te hervormen, maar momenteel heeft dat nog niet voor de gewenste successen gezorgd. Ferrari ligt ver achter op Red Bull Racing en vecht met Aston Martin om de derde plaats in het constructeurskampioenschap.

Droom

Voormalig Ferrari-president Luca di Montezemolo is zeer kritisch op zijn voormalige werkgever. De Italiaan wil dat Ferrari meer naar de voorgrond stapt. In gesprek met Quotidiano Nazionale doet hij een opvallende uitspraak: "Als fan droom ik niet van een Ferrari dat altijd wint, maar wel van een Ferrari dat altijd tot en met de laatste race meestrijdt om de titel. In 1997, 1998, 1999, 2008, 2010 en 2012 was dat bijvoorbeeld het geval. Je kan verliezen, maar doe dat als de protagonist en niet in een bijrol."

Leclerc

Di Montezemolo denkt dat Ferrari moet vasthouden aan Charles Leclerc om de doelen te kunnen behalen. De Monegask geldt nog steeds als een groot talent, maar beschikt wel over een contract dat eind 2024 afloopt. Di Montezemolo heeft een duidelijke boodschap: "Hij is goed en ik denk niet dat er coureurs beschikbaar zijn die beter zijn dan hem. Momenteel zijn de coureurs echter niet het grote probleem. Als president moest ik aan een dream team bouwen, van Schumacher tot Todt en van Brawn tot Byrne."

  Dat klopt, hij kon zich niet meer vinden in het beleid van Elkann en voelde geen vertrouwen meer, waarop hij zelf zijn ontslag indiende.

  En in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 en 2022 streed Ferrari weliswaar niet tot de laatste ronde mee, maar waren ze wel de beste na de kampioen en hebben ze mooie poles, podia en overwinningen behaald. In het bijzonder de overwinning van Leclerc op Monza na een heroïsch gevecht met de Mercedessen was memorabel.
