Trotse Albon dankt de wind: "Hier heb je zelfvertrouwen nodig"

Eén van de grootste verrassingen van de Nederlandse kwalificatie was Alexander Albon. De Thaise Williams-coureur streed voortdurend mee om de snelste tijden en sloot de kwalificatie af met een verrassende vierde plaats. Albon was na afloop enorm trots en gaf aan dat hij veel hulp kreeg van de wind.

Albon komt dit seizoen wel vaker goed voor de dag in de kwalificatie. De Thaise Brit had voorafgaand het raceweekend in Zandvoort niet al te veel vertrouwen in een goed resultaat, maar kon toch goed meekomen met de toppers. In de kwalificatie had hij meer dan eens de snelste tijd in handen. Toch waren uiteindelijk alleen Max Verstappen, Lando Norris en George Russell sneller dan Albon.

Speciaal

Albon lachte na afloop zijn tanden bloot. De Thaise coureur was trots op zichzelf en op zijn team. Albon gaf aan dat hij eigenlijk niet wist waarom hij zo snel was. In gesprek met Sky Sports doet hij zijn verhaal: "Dit was echt een zeer speciale sessie. De pace is al sinds de eerste vrije training best wel goed. Dit is natuurlijk een erg leuke verrassing. We moeten eens gaan uitzoeken waarom we hier zo sterk zijn."

Wind

Albon geeft wel eerlijk toe dat Williams wat probleempjes heeft met het remmen. Door de tegenwind, was dit probleem veel minder groot dan verwacht. Hij hoopt dat het morgen weer flink zal waaien, maar hij heeft tevens veel zelfvertrouwen: "Dit is een circuit waar je vertrouwen nodig hebt. Je moet echt een connectie hebben met je auto. De laatste ronde was de enige ronde in droge omstandigheden die ik in deze sessie heb gereden."

  Terwijl de wind toch doorgaans de wind van voren krijgt.

  Albon oogt als een brave en zachte jongen, iemand op dit forum zou zeggen dat hij geen uitstraling heeft. Maar hij trapt die Williams desondanks toch effe op de 2e startrij. Geweldige prestatie.

  @Snork, is dat die iemand die, ondanks zijn giga mensenkennis en F1-knowhow, niets van Hulkenberg weet en denkt dat een F1-team met maar één auto aan GP's mag meedoen?

  Albon is net zo een rijder als Gasly of Perez - goede middenmootrijder, goed voor een team als Williams. Alleen al aan het resultaat van vandaag zag je dat de Williams hier oprecht snel was.
  
  Meevaller is natuurlijk dat Sargeant meer wagens in de muur zet dan dat er kwalificatiesessies zijn.

Die Williams ging echt hard. Zelfs Sargeant liet er leuke dingen mee zien. Wel jammer van zijn crash want hij was lekker bezig.

  Hoezo was Sargeant lekker bezig? Wat is dat toch altijd voor iets raars dat coureurs complimenten krijgen terwijl ze het potentieel van een wagen maar half benutten?
  
  Albon was vele malen sneller dan Sargeant. Maar als Sargeant dan P10 pakt is het ineens knap?
  
  Met Stroll ook altijd t zelfde liedje. Alonso pakte het ene na het andere podium, maar als Stroll dan een keer 6e wordt ofzo is het ineens "een goede race".
  
  Nee, wat slecht is, is gewoon slecht. Sargeant had gister een hele goede auto, waar hij veel te weinig uit heeft gehaald.

En heel erg knap van het eam van Williams, en James Vowles.
Ik geloof wel dat hij her team naar voren heeft, hoewel de stijgende lijn al was ingezet. Ze zijn al lang niet meer het lelijke eendje van de grid.

De verwachting was dat Zandvoort heel lastig zou worden, en dat Monza ze beter zou liggen. Nou, ik ben benieuwd!
