Mercedes opent achtervolging op Red Bull en ziet 'bemoedigende' signalen

Het team van Mercedes beleefde in Zandvoort een weekend om snel te vergeten. De resultaten waren niet om over naar huis te schrijven, maar toch was men tevreden. Het team zag veel positieve dingen en hoopt te schitteren in Monza. Mike Elliott stelt dat zijn team bemoedigende dingen voor de toekomst ziet.

In Zandvoort kenden Lewis Hamilton en George Russell afgelopen weekend geen sterke race. Dit weekend in Monza willen ze daar verandering in gaan brengen, er is in ieder geval veel zelfvertrouwen aanwezig bij Mercedes. Achter de schermen werkt men hard door om het gat met koploper Red Bull Racing te kunnen verkleinen. Volgens het team zelf ziet dat er allemaal best wel goed uit.

Winnen

Chief Technical Officer Mike Elliott is in ieder geval positief gestemd. Elliott ziet veel goede ontwikkelingen, maar hij wil het doel ook niet uit het oog verliezen. In de debrief op het YouTube-kanaal van Mercedes spreekt hij zich uit: "We willen natuurlijk races winnen. We willen een auto hebben die vooraan mee kan gaan strijden, in het bijzonder met Max Verstappen in de Red Bull. Momenteel strijden we nog om de tweede plaats. Onze pace zat in Zandvoort in de buurt van de pace van Alonso in de Aston Martin en Norris in de McLaren."

Positieve signalen

Elliott weet dat het een lastige taak gaat worden om Red Bull op termijn bij te benen. Toch is er niets onmogelijk en hij ziet een aantal positieve signalen: "We moeten ons nu echt naar de voorkant van die groep gaan bewegen, om zo Verstappen te achtervolgen. Het is wel bemoedigend om te zien dat onze performance race na race constant lijkt te zijn. We zien niet de pieken en dalen die we eerder zagen en we weten het beste uit de auto te halen. Dat is bemoedigend voor de toekomst."

  Het is echt hilarisch om te zien hoe er uit het Mercedes-kamp iedere race weer berichten komen dat ze nu snappen welke kant ze op moeten, dat ze het gat gaan dichten, dat ze behoorlijke stappen hebben gezet... Maar toch staat Lewis in FP2 17e en George 9e. Beide coureurs hebben in interviews aan dat ze al blij zouden zijn als ze Q3 halen. Dan kun je de achtervolging wel inzetten, maar je achtervolgt en Porsche 911 in een Lada Niva. Technisch gezien een achtervolging, maar de achterstand wordt steeds groter.
  
  Of bedoelen ze dat ze de Red Bulls iedere race weer achtervolgen, want dat is feitelijk waar...

53 jaar geleden (5 september 1970) verongelukte de Oostenrijkse legende Jochen Rindt tijdens de training op Monza. Door zijn grote voorsprong in de tussenstand van het WK werd Rindt 'postuum' wereldkampioen, de enige in de Formule 1.

Vorig jaar kwam er een boeiende docu uit over de carrière van de Oostenrijker en zijn noodlottige afscheid, met onder andere Helmut Marko, Jackie Stewart en Bernie Ecclestone die aan het woord komen.

Als Mercedes in 2025 weer mee wil doen om de knikkers, dan moeten ze in 2024 als laatste eindigen. Dan kunnen ze een beetje ontwikkelingsachterstand goed maken met de extra uren die ze krijgen. Kijk naar Williams. Van stijf achteraan naar de bovenkant van het middenveld.
