Russell trots op nieuw Mercedes-contract: "Voor het eten waren we er al uit"

Niet alleen Lewis Hamilton verlengde op donderdag zijn Mercedes-contract, ook George Russell zette zijn handtekening onder een nieuwe verbintenis. Net als Hamilton verlengde Russell zijn contract tot en met 2025. De Brit is er zeer tevreden mee en geeft aan dat de onderhandelingen zeer vlot gingen.

Russell is al jaren onderdeel van de Mercedes-familie. De Britse coureur werd in de opstapklassen al bijgestaan door Mercedes en hij voelt zich dan ook thuis bij de Duitse renstal. Hij debuteerde bij het team van Williams in de Formule 1, maar promoveerde vorig seizoen naar het team van Mercedes. In zijn eerste seizoen versloeg hij direct zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton en won hij in Brazilië zijn eerste Grand Prix. Hij is dan ook tevreden bij het team.

Onderhandelen

Russell geeft in Monza dan ook aan dat hij zeer kort om tafel heeft gezeten met Mercedes om over het nieuwe contract te praten. Beide partijen vonden elkaar al vrij vlot en in gesprek met Motorsport.com legt Russell het zeer korte proces uit: "Het was een snel proces. Het was niet meer dan twee uur onderhandelen met elkaar. Eigenlijk was het op één avond voor het eten al klaar."

Familie

De band tussen Mercedes en Russell is dan ook zeer sterk. De Britse coureur voelt zich thuis bij het Duitse team en daar is hij goudeerlijk over: "Het is alsof we met elkaar zijn getrouwd. Ik ben al onderdeel van het team sinds ik 17 jaar oud was, toen reed ik nog in de Formule 3. Toto Wolff maakte toen duidelijk dat ik vanaf daar naar de Formule 2 zou gaan en daarna naar Williams om vervolgens bij Mercedes te komen. Met een Mercedes maak je kans om kampioenschappen te winnen, het was dus een eenvoudige keuze."

  vermoedelijk=mogelijk. Het kan net zo goed een positief teken zijn. Als 2 partijen graag met elkaar doorwillen kun je er snel uit zijn. Natuurlijk is er geen CAO voor F1 rijders, maar ze weten aan beide kanten wel vrij goed wat de ander waard is. Coureurs vallen buiten de budgetcap dus teams zullen daar niet snel op gaan bezuinigen.

Natuurlijk waren ze er snel uit. Toto had het kruisje aangewezen waar hij moest tekenen en voila. Die jongen heeft toch niets te eisen.

  Als hij wat langer bij Mercedes blijft en de successen komen, dan kan hij steeds meer gaan eisen en staan er twee kruisjes op de contracten, eentje voor Toto en eentje voor vriend George.
