Russell verwacht spannende kwalificatie: "Het zal dicht bij elkaar zitten"

Vandaag staat de kwalificatie op het programma op het circuit van Monza. Het belooft een groot spektakel te worden aangezien de verschillen in de vrije trainingen zeer klein waren. Daarnaast wordt er vandaag getest met de Alternative Tyre Allocation. George Russell denkt dat dit een positief effect heeft op de spanning in de kwalificatie.

Voor de tweede keer dit seizoen wordt er geëxperimenteerd met de Alternative Tyre Allocation. Het is een experiment van bandenleverancier Pirelli waarbij de coureurs tijdens de kwalificatie verplicht gebruik moeten maken van voorgeschreven bandencompounds. In het eerste kwalificatiedeel moet men de harde banden gebruiken, in het tweede deel de mediums en in het beslissende derde deel de softs. Een nadeel van dit experiment, is dat de coureurs minder bandensets tot hun beschikking hebben.

Mercedes-coureur George Russell verwacht dat er veel gaat gebeuren in de kwalificatie. Hij wijst dan ook naar de ATA en spreekt zich uit bij Motorsport.com: "Het zal heel dicht bij elkaar zitten. Zeker tussen ons, McLaren, Aston Martin, Ferrari, maar ook Williams. Het zal hoe dan ook een heel erg spannend gevecht gaan worden om in Q3 te komen, maar we zijn op de mediums en de hards competitiever. We moeten iets zien te vinden om verder op de ranglijst te komen. Als we alles goed doen, dan kan je op de tweede startrij komen. Als dat niet lukt, eindig je rond P8 of P10."
