Gasly zag blamage aankomen: "Komen twee seconden te kort"

Het team van Alpine beleefde gisteren op het circuit Monza een rampzalige kwalificatie. Zowel Esteban Ocon als Pierre Gasly vielen af in het eerste kwalificatiegedeelte. Het was een enorme teleurstelling voor de Franse renstal. Gasly baalde als een stekker, maar hij geeft toe dat hij dit al aan had zien komen.

Gasly pakte vorige week in Zandvoort nog een sensationele podiumplaats. De Franse coureur profiteerde op het circuit in de Noord-Hollandse duinen van een tijdstraf van Sergio Perez en eindigde daardoor op de derde plaats. Door deze podiumplek waren de verwachtingen voor Alpine en Gasly zeer hoog in Monza. Maar, al vrijwel het hele weekend ziet Alpine er niet sterk uit. De auto's kwamen veel snelheid te kort en konden op geen enkel moment een vuist maken.

Balans

Gasly was wel teleurgesteld met zijn resultaat. De Franse coureur had op meer gehoopt, maar wilde wel realistisch blijven. Na afloop van zijn korte kwalificatie sprak hij zich uit bij Motorsport.com: "Ik was dit hele weekend eigenlijk best wel blij met de balans van de auto, maar we komen al het hele weekend zo'n twee seconden te kort. Toen we in Monza arriveerden wisten we al dat dit het moeilijkste weekend van het jaar zou worden met al deze rechte stukken. Dat is dus ook overduidelijk het geval."

Optimisme

Gasly wist wat hem te wachten stond, maar toch had hij ergens nog wel wat hoop. De Franse coureur stelt dat de verplichte harde band hem misschien nog hadden kunnen helpen: "We hadden dus wel zien aankomen dat we zouden afvallen in het eerste kwalificatiedeel. Je moet altijd optimistisch zijn, dus ik dacht dat we met de harde banden wel kans zouden maken. Maar dit was alles wat we in ons hadden. Tot nu toe is het dus een enorm teleurstellend weekend."

Het is echter nog niet duidelijk of San Giovanni Battista hen ook echt gehoord heeft, het gejuich om de pole van Carlos was zelfs in de Dom niet te missen.
