Palou beseft zich dat F1-zitje waarschijnlijk onmogelijk is

IndyCar-kampioen Alex Palou zorgde eerder dit jaar voor flink wat ophef toen hij zijn contract met het team van McLaren verbrak. De Spanjaard zou eigenlijk vanaf volgend seizoen voor het team gaan rijden, maar hij heeft die afspraak verbroken. Palou beseft zich dat zijn Formule 1-kansen hierdoor flink zijn afgenomen.

Palou wordt al geruime tijd in verband gebracht met een zitje in de Formule 1. De Spanjaard tekende dan ook een IndyCar-zitje bij het team van McLaren voor 2024. Dit seizoen fungeerde hij al als reservecoureur van het Formule 1-team en daarnaast werkte hij een aantal tests af voor het team. Deze deal volgde na een soap waarbij hij eerst een contractverlenging met Chip Ganassi Racing ontkende en daarna toch bijtekende bij dit team.

Chaos

Dit jaar waren de rollen dus omgedraaid, Palou verbrak zijn McLaren-contract en lijkt Ganassi trouw te blijven. De Spanjaard spreekt zich tegenover SoyMotor uit over de situatie: "Het is een chaotische situatie. Ik hoop dat ik ooit het verhaal vanaf mijn kant kan gaan vertellen, stap voor stap, dag voor dag en de opties die ik wel en niet had. Het mag duidelijk zijn dat ik nu de beste middelen heb die mogelijk zijn in de IndyCar."

Gepasseerd

Palou stelt dat de Formule 1 nooit zijn enige doel is geweest. Hij wil zijn IndyCar-status niet opofferen voor de koningsklasse van de autosport: "Ik heb het geprobeerd, ik heb in die auto gezeten en volgens mij ging het best goed. De kansen kwamen alleen niet. Ik denk niet dat ik het anders had kunnen doen, dus waarschijnlijk komt er ook geen kans meer. Ik begin ook te oud te worden voor de Formule 1. Als er nog een kans komt, dan zou dat mooi zijn. Zo niet, dan blijf ik het hier proberen. Volgend jaar ben ik 27, dat is toch iets anders dan 21. De kans kan zeker nog komen, maar ik ga niet meer zitten wachten. Het juiste moment is misschien gepasseerd."

Het fijne weten we er natuurlijk niet van. Maar gezien Zak al een paar jaar bij iedere coureur die hij tegenkomt een F1 worst voorhoudt kan ik me voorstellen dat Palou huiverig is geworden.

Ik krijg bij het lezen van zijn achternaam altijd zo´n jaren 90 stripfiguur voor mij te zien.

Ik begrijp best dat Palou niet zoveel vertrouwen had in zijn F1 kansen.
Maar als hij bij McLaren was gebleven, had hij sowieso bij hun IndyCar team kunnen rijden en de deur naar de F1 opengehouden. Arrow McLaren is gewoon een heel goed team in de IndyCar en zit kort achter Ganassi en Penske. Daarmee kon hij zeker races en zelfs het kampioenschap winnen. Dat zou een fenomenale prestatie zijn geweest.
Met Norris die serieus in beeld is bij Red Bull, zal er mogelijk best snel een plekje vrij komen bij McLaren. Zelfs als Zak dan besluit om Albon te nemen, dan zou Palou best bij Williams in beeld kunnen komen, eventueel als wisselgeld voor Albon. Want hoewel een rookie in F1, hij heeft al bewezen in een top autosport klasse meerdere keren kampioen te kunnen worden. Voor de F1 zou het een mooie kans zijn om een IndyCar kampioen te halen en te zien hoe dat gaat.

Nu hij bij Ganassi heeft getekend, heeft hij de deur naar de F1 keihard dichtgegooid. Dat is definitief ten einde, zeker met deze hele contractsaga zal geen team zich nog aan hem willen branden.
