Brown verwacht geen Palou in Singapore

Alex Palou zorgde vorige maand voor een enorme rel in de Amerikaanse IndyCar-klasse. De Spanjaard verscheurde zijn McLaren-contract voor 2024. Hij nam deze beslissing zelf en zijn management en McLaren reageerden woest. Palou's beslissing heeft nu ook gevolgen voor het Formule 1-team van McLaren, de Spanjaard moet namelijk aanwezig zijn in Singapore.

Volgende week gaat het Formule 1-seizoen weer verder met de bekende nachtrace op het circuit van Singapore. Aangezien Palou dit seizoen ook fungeerde als reservecoureur van McLaren, wordt hij in deze functie verwacht in Singapore. De kans dat hij aanwezig is in de Aziatische stadsstaat, is echter nihil. Dit zorgt er overigens wel voor dat Patricio O'Ward later dit seizoen een vrije training zal gaan rijden.

In het slotweekend van het IndyCar-seizoen liet McLaren-CEO Zak Brown zich uit over Palou. Brown legt namelijk uit dat de Spaanse coureur volgende week in Singapore wordt verwacht. In gesprek met The Race legt Brown het uit: "Hij is momenteel nog steeds onze reservecoureur. Dat ligt nu dus ietsje anders, want ik denk dat hij zijn neus zal laten zien in Singapore. Hij moet eigenlijk wel aanwezig zijn. Maar goed, we hebben dit seizoen een aantal verschillende reservecoureurs gehad. Daar gaan we nu dus gewoon mee door in de aanstaande weekenden."

    Deze man heeft bewezen goed genoeg te zijn voor de F1. En niet alleen goed genoeg, ik denk ook dat hij zich in de F1 staande kan houden. Jammer dat niemand hem de kans wil geven. Het zou bijvoorbeeld een hele mooie optie naast Albon zijn. Maar ook Alfa zou best voor Palou kunnen gaan. Jammer dat de teams zo conservatief zijn. Dat er bij McLaren geen plek is zolang Norris en Piastri daar rijden begrijp ik volkomen, maar andere teams zouden wel eens afstand mogen doen van hun te matige coureurs.

      Ik zou t wel lef vinden als die gewoon met een Mclaren shirtje daar staat op donderdag en zegt... ho ho... hier hebben jullie mij al voor betaald... ik kom mijn diensten leveren.

      Ik zou hem naast of te vervanging van Bottas inzetten in die Alfa. Gevoelsmatig denk ik dat (op langere termijn) hij het beter zou doen dan Bottas en Zhou bij elkaar.

      Volledig mee eens!
      Ik snap sowieso niet waarom ze moeilijk doen en geen nieuwe teams toelaten.

      In begin 90s had je aardig wat (prive-)teams en het was vrij simpel - als je 107% haalt dan ben je goed genoeg om mee te doen.

      Het is automatisme dat je een ontbrekend woord niet ziet, dat je dat niet opvalt, want je verwacht niet dat het er niet staat. Ook niet in de enige alinea die ik hier altijd lees.
