O'Ward weer in actie voor McLaren tijdens VT1 van Abu Dhabi

Pato O'Ward zal net als in 2022 tijdens de eerste vrije training van Abu Dhabi plaatsnemen in de McLaren. Dat heeft de renstal via sociale media bekend gemaakt. De Mexicaan is op dit moment actief in de IndyCar voor de formatie uit Woking en zal in 2024 opnieuw uitkomen in de Amerikaanse tegenhanger van de Formule 1.

In 2022 maakte O'Ward op het Yas Marina Circuit zijn officiële F1-debuut. Daarin werd de Mexicaan achttiende voor andere nieuwkomers Jack Doohan (Alpine) en Felipe Drugovich (Aston Martin). O'Ward heeft in het verleden meerdere malen getest voor McLaren. In 2021 reed de IndyCar-coureur voor het eerst in de - toen huidige - McLaren bij een vierdaagse test in Abu Dhabi, een dag na de allerlaatste Grand Prix waar Max Verstappen in de laatste ronde het wereldkampioen toe-eigende . Die test kwam tot stand na een weddenschap met CEO Zak Brown. De afspraak was dat O'Ward een test zou krijgen mits hij minimaal een overwinning zou pakken tijdens het IndyCar-seizoen van 2021.

In het IndyCar-seizoen van dit jaar bleef een zege uit, maar O'Ward scoorde wel vier tweede plaatsen en drie derde plaatsen. Hij werd uiteindelijke vierde in het kampioenschap en was de best scorende McLaren-coureur. De Mexicaan eindigde achter Scott McLauglin, zesvoudig kampioen Scott Dixon en kampioen Alex Palou.
