McLaren gaat informatie uitwisselen met Toyota

Het team van McLaren verraste vorige weekend in Japan met de aankondiging van hun nieuwe reservecoureur. Het team maakte bekend dat Ryo Hirakawa vanaf 2024 zal gaan fungeren als één van hun reserves. Hirakawa is ook fabriekscoureur van Toyota in het WEC. Andrea Stella geeft toe dat McLaren en Toyota informatie gaan uitwisselen.

Hirakawa is zeker geen slechte coureur, maar de Japanner werd nooit eerder in verband gebracht met de Formule 1. In het WEC laat hij in dienst van Toyota veel goede dingen zien. De top van Toyota was in Suzuka aanwezig bij de prestatie van Hirakawa als McLaren-reserve. Het was opvallend, maar de Japanners gaven aan dat de aanwezigheid van topman Akio Toyoda niets te maken hebben met hernieuwde Formule 1-plannen.

Maar, er komt wel een nieuwe samenwerking tussen Toyota en McLaren aan. De Britse renstal heeft immers een ontwikkelingsprogramma opgezet waarbij coureurs veel meters maken in verouderde Formule 1-wagens. Volgens McLaren-teambaas Andrea Stella is dit ook een reden van de samenwerking met Toyota en Hirakawa. In gesprek met Motorsport.com legt hij het uit: "Dit is niet alleen voor de coureurs zelf. Wij zijn ook geïnteresseerd in een betje uitwisseling over hoe we omgaan met prestaties en de ontwikkeling van de coureurs. We willen onze horizon verbreden."

Japanners zijn trotse mensen. De vorige keer zijn ze in mijn ogen 3 a 4 jaar te vroeg met de f1 gestopt.

En Toyota wil absoluut de F1 van dichtbij in de gaten houden.
Japanners zijn trotse mensen. De vorige keer zijn ze in mijn ogen 3 a 4 jaar te vroeg met de f1 gestopt.

Het zal mij niets verbazen als ze weer een f1 motor in ontwikkeling hebben. (Althans de eerste prototype/ontwerp fase). En dat ze terug gaan komen in het kader van unfinished business...

  Ik draag zelf Toyota een warm hart toe, dus ik zou het geweldig vinden hen te zien terugkeren in de Formule 1!

Stella doet behoorlijk zijn job ondanks de kritiek eerder. We zullen nog moeten zien hoe James Key het doet bij Audi - bij McLaren gaat het sinds zijn vertrek beter.

  Blijft wel de vraag: in hoeverre is de auto die nu op de grid staat , nog een product van James Key? Misschien heeft Key wel beter werk afgeleverd dan er op het moment dat hij McLaren verliet gedacht werd .

  Geloof nooit dat dit de geupdate wagen door Key werd ontwopen, daarvoor is hij te lang vertrokken. Hij kon voordien ook geen echte potten breken - we zullen zien....
