Hamilton ontkent Ferrari-interesse niet: "Paar irrelevante gesprekken gevoerd"

Na maanden vol geruchten over zijn toekomst tekende Lewis Hamilton vorige maand eindelijk zijn nieuwe Mercedes-contract. De Brit staat nu tot en met 2025 onder contract bij de Duitse renstal. Hamilton geeft wel toe dat hij in de afgelopen periode een paar 'irrelevante' gesprekken heeft gevoerd met Ferrari.

Hamilton en Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff benadrukten geruime tijd dat hun nieuwe deal zo goed als rond was. Toch duurde het zeer lang voordat er iets officieel bekend werd gemaakt. Dit zorgde ervoor dat er veel geruchten naar buiten kwamen over de toekomst van Hamilton. Eén van de meest gehoorde roddels ging over een mogelijke overstap naar Ferrari. De Italiaanse renstal wilde Hamilton aantrekken om op jacht te gaan naar een nieuwe titel.

Hamilton heeft zich nooit uitgesproken over de mogelijke onderhandelingen met Ferrari. De Brit wil het ook niet naar het rijk der fabelen verwijzen. Sterker nog, hij kan het niet ontkennen. In een interview met het Zwitserse Blick spreekt hij zich uit over de veel besproken geruchten: "Dat is nooit gebeurd. Oké, we hebben wel een paar irrelevante gesprekken met elkaar gevoerd. Ik ken namelijk best wel veel goede mensen bij dat team. Maar, ik voelde mij nooit echt helemaal klaar om naar Italië te verhuizen."
