Sainz baalt van achterstand: "Red Bull heeft twee jaar voorsprong"

Het team van Red Bull Racing heeft de touwtjes momenteel stevig in handen in de Formule 1. De Oostenrijkse renstal werd dit seizoen slechts één keer verslagen en de constructeurstitel is ook al binnen. Carlos Sainz belooft de Ferrari-fans dat ze er alles aan gaan doen om het gat te dichten, maar hij realiseert zich ook dat de Red Bull-dominantie nog lang niet voorbij is.

Ferrari-coureur Sainz is tot nu toe de enige coureur die Red Bull wist te verslaan in 2023. Vorige maand mocht hij juichen in Singapore, hij profiteerde van de tegenvallende prestaties van Red Bull op het stratencircuit in de Aziatische stadstaat. Maar, Red Bull nam daarna weer de regie over. In Japan was Max Verstappen weer veel sneller dan de rest van het veld en door zijn zege werd Red Bull in Suzuka constructeurskampioen.

Voorsprong

Sainz laat weten dat zijn team Ferrari op termijn in staat is om Red Bull te verslaan. De Spanjaard realiseert zich echter wel dat het gat zeer groot is. Tijdens een sponsorevenement in Madrid spreekt hij zich uit: "Red Bull heeft een voorsprong van twee jaar. Je hebt eerst dus te maken met de uitdaging om op hun niveau te komen, daarom zijn ze nu zo dominant. De tijd zal ons vertellen wat er gebeurt, we moeten ons wel op onszelf focussen."

2025

Sommige kenners vrezen dat Red Bull tot en met 2025 zal blijven heersen in de Formule 1. Sainz wil zich daar niet echt over uitspreken. Maar, de Spaanse Ferrari-coureur kan het ook niet uitsluiten: "Dat zal de tijd ons gaan vertellen, ik weet het gewoon niet. Ik weet niet wat ik moet zeggen. Ik kan alleen maar optimistisch zijn en denken dat Ferrari de capaciteit heeft om het gat te dichten, vooral omdat McLaren het ook heeft laten zien. We weten tenminste wat we moeten doen, we weten wat we moeten verbeteren. Ik hoop dat het lukt."

Je kan ervan uitgaan dat wanneer hij zegt dat RB 2jaar voorsprong heeft, ook Ferrari een ander concept opstart in 2024. Benieuwd of het een cy paste is of een eigen ontwerp.

Elementen van de RB zullen er zeker in terug te vinden zijn, zoals quasi bij ieder team op de grid. Het pessimisme (terwijl ze al een stuk hebben ontwikkeld voor 2024) is verontrustend. Zelfs Mercedes zou al een virtuele bolide klaar hebben waarbij ze hoopvol zijn. Als Carlos dat niet is terwijl we weten dat zij eerder gestart zijn met de 2024 bolide, lijkt me dat (tussen de lijnen) geen goed teken te zijn.

Ik weet niet of je dit in tijd kunt uitspreken, Mercedes had volgens alles twee jaar voorsprong met de motoren. RBR heeft het grote voordeel dat Newey al ruime kennen had in de F1 met auto's met ground effect. Mijn gevoel zegt mij dat dit weer een zoveelste poging is om de Fia zover te krijgen om in te grijpen en RBR af te remmen.

Sainz is hier toch realistischer dan Russell in het andere artikel. Die loopt alweer te roepen dat hij er vertrouwen in heeft dat Mercedes (wat zij kunnen dat volgens hem) het gat naar Red Bull zo goed als kan dichten.
