McLaren verwacht sterk Mercedes in 2024

Het team van McLaren is momenteel bezig met een sterk seizoen in de Formule 1. De Britse renstal heeft zich herpakt na een teleurstellende seizoenstart. Achter de schermen zijn ze bezig met de ontwikkeling van de wagen voor 2024. Andrea Stella durft nog geen voorspellingen te doen, maar hij verwacht wel een sterk Mercedes in het komende jaar.

McLaren begon op een enorm tegenvallende manier aan het huidige seizoen. De Britse renstal introduceerde daarna een aantal verregaande updates en dat zorgde voor grote stappen naar voren. Ze begonnen steeds beter te presteren en ze zijn nu vaak het tweede team achter Red Bull Racing. Vanzelfsprekend zijn ze tevreden met hun huidige resultaten, maar ze willen niet te vroeg juichen voor 2024.

Teambaas Andrea Stella geeft wel toe dat het zonnetje langzaam begint te schijnen. Stella heeft de data bekeken en spreekt zich uit bij Motorsport.com: "De ontwikkeling die we nu zien bij de auto voor volgend jaar, is bemoedigend. Ik denk echter wel dat iedereen dit heeft, want we zien dat de concepten duidelijk worden. We hebben geen idee of we ons sneller ontwikkelen dan andere teams en we weten zeker niet of we sneller ontwikkelen dan Red Bull."

Mercedes

Stella wil dan ook niets zeggen over de pikorde voor het aankomende seizoen. Hij wijst namelijk niet alleen naar Red Bull, maar ook naar Mercedes: "Laten we niet vergeten dat ook Mercedes nu weet waar ze aan moeten werken. Ik denk dat ze sterk zullen terugkomen. Op dit moment kun je niet zeggen wat de pikorde voor volgend jaar zal zijn, dat zien we dan wel weer. Ik denk dat dingen kunnen evolueren."

Patroon de laatste 3 jaar is dat McLaren nooit over een geheel seizoen sterk voor de dag komt. Niet ondenkbaar dus dat ze na het winterseizoen wederom wat plekken zijn gekelderd in de rangorde

  Dat kan maar er zijn ook hele positieve tekenen voor dit team. Zo is McLaren als enige die met zekerheid (on track) weet waar ze de snelheid moeten vandaan halen. Daarnaast hebben ze behoorlijk meer CFD en tunneltijd dan hun naaste concurrenten voor de verdere ontwikkeling. Ze hebben een goed team aan technische mensen en de "reshuffle" werpt onmiddellijk zijn vruchten af. 2 snelle piloten, goede operationele mensen en je komt al heel ver. Ook hun nieuwe windtunnel is in gebruik genomen voor de 2024 wagen.
  
  RB is enkel te verslaan met een ander concept gezien hun ervaring die ze hebben opgedaan van bij de start van deze nieuwe technische regelgeving en de evolutie die ze maken. Zo een voorsprong van een ontwikkelingskampioen valt niet in te halen. Gezien het McLaren's concept een cy/paste is van de RB kan je ervan uitgaan dat ze de 2de macht worden(blijven) met de ervaring van de 2de helft van 2023 en de update die ze daarop gaan brengen in 2024.
  
  Het is enkel als Mercedes en/of Ferrari met een ander concept komen (waar wel elementen van de RB in terug te vinden zijn) en(!) sneller is (op termijn) dan het RB concept, dat McLaren in de rangorde naar beneden zal "kelderen". Gezien beter doen dan het RB concept een "draconian" ;-) opgave is, ben ik meer optimistisch voor dit team.

Hier twijfel ik dus aan. Op de een of andere manier wekt Mercedes op mij de indruk dat ze het niet weten. Alsof ze met een netje in het rond aan het zwaaien zijn, en dan maar hopen dat er uiteindelijk een vlinder in zit.
