Verrassende Piastri blijft kalm: "Dit was een heel goed rondje"

Niet Max Verstappen, maar Oscar Piastri start later vandaag vanaf de pole position in de Sprint. De Australische McLaren-coureur profiteerde van foutjes van Verstappen en Lando Norris. Piastri was na afloop enorm rustig en de pole veroorzaakte dan ook niets meer dan een grote glimlach bij hem.

De McLarens werden voorafgaand het raceweekend in Qatar al gezien als mogelijke outsiders voor een goed resultaat. De bolides van de Britse renstal gaan al geruime tijd zeer goed en ook op het circuit van Losail werd dit maar weer eens duidelijk. Nadat Max Verstappen over de track limits was gegaan, werd duidelijk dat de McLarens mochten gaan vechten om de pole. Norris ging wijd in de laatste bocht waardoor de pole naar Piastri ging.

Tevreden

Nadat hij gisteren zijn derde plaats verloor vanwege de track limits, mocht hij nu wel zijn interview met Naomi Schiff afmaken. De jonge Australiër nam de felicitaties met een grote grijns in ontvangst: "Ik ben heel erg blij, dit was een heel erg goed rondje. Ik zag op het grote scherm dat Lando een foutje maakte in de laatste bocht. Ik had het best lastig in de eerste twee delen van de shootout, maar in het laatste gedeelte lukte het wel. Ik ben heel erg blij, het team heeft geweldig werk geleverd."

Verstappen

Piastri wil vanzelfsprekend op jacht gaan naar de zege in de aanstaande sprintrace. Hij realiseert zich echter ook wel dat Max Verstappen waarschijnlijk veel sneller zal zijn in deze korte race: "Max start op de derde plaats, dus hij ligt zeker geen miljoenen kilometers achter op mij. De banden vormen nog wel een groot vraagteken, dus we gaan ons best doen en we gaan kijken wat er mogelijk is."

Goede ronde gereden, maar de mazzel dat Lando en Max hun ronde delete werden, je moet ook wel eens geluk hebben.

Maar Max zal de sprintrace gaan winnen, die is veel sneller.

  1:24.543 was die ongeldige ronde van Max, die was dus sowieso langzamer dan die van Piastri. Maar t was natuurlijk anders geweest met een banker op de klokken. Norris zn ronde was meer dan een seconde langzamer en helemaal op het eind, dus dat heeft geen invloed gehad verder.

toch zat Norris er na S2 nog weer 0,158 onder. t is dus ook vooral Norris die het liet liggen op het einde. Was op bepaalde punten in de kwalificatie ook ruim een halve seconde sneller. Desalniettemin natuurlijk knap dat Piastri m wel pakt uiteindelijk maar eerlijk gezegd vond ik Norris een veel sterkere indruk maken vandaag. Kun je zeggen dat het er in Q3 pas omgaat, maar Piastri zat in Q2 toch angstvallig dicht bij de cut-off tijd. Benieuwd hoe de race gaat verlopen.

Piastri is een geweldige aanwinst. Het zou leuk zijn als hij de sprint wint. Maar ik verwacht dat hij teveel van zijn banden vraagt als hij onder druk komt.
