Wat viel op tijdens de Grand Prix van Qatar?

Gisteren werd op het circuit van Losail in Qatar de Grand Prix verreden. Max Verstappen had de wereldtitel al op zak, maar dat betekende niet dat het een saaie avond was. Onder het kunstlicht werd er een opvallende wedstrijd verreden en GPToday.net zet een aantal van deze zaken op een rij.

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen kende een zeer sterk raceweekend in Qatar. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur veroverde zijn derde wereldtitel. Hij deed dit al in de sprintrace, dus de Grand Prix was voor hem eigenlijk een soort ererondje. Verstappen nam het ererondje echter zeer serieus. Hij reed een foutloze race en zijn zege kwam op geen enkel moment in gevaar. Hij zag zijn concurrenten alleen in zijn spiegels en hij was wederom veel sneller dan zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez. Hij sloot zijn kampioensweekend af met een ware kampioensrace.

Hitte

De organisatie van de Grand Prix mag van geluk spreken dat de race volgend seizoen iets later in het jaar op de kalender staat. Door de hitte veranderde de race namelijk in een onplezierige slijtageslag. Logan Sargeant viel uit met uitdrogingsverschijnselen, Esteban Ocon moest overgeven, Lance Stroll viel bijna flauw en Alexander Albon moest naar het medisch centrum. Ook Max Verstappen gaf aan dat het te heet was en daar moet de Formule 1 ook naar luisteren. De gezondheid van de coureurs moet altijd op één staan, maar hier was dat niet het geval. De show werd gevaarlijk en daar zullen lessen uit worden getrokken.

Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri scoorde in Qatar een vrachtlading aan WK-punten. Hij won de sprintrace en hij kwam gisteren als tweede over de streep in de Grand Prix. Het was een waanzinnig resultaat voor een coureur die nog maar bezig is met zijn eerste seizoen in de Formule 1. De jonge Australiër wordt de hemel in geprezen, maar het is misschien iets te vroeg om hem te bestempelen als 'golden boy'. Piastri schittert, maar het is altijd belangrijk om te zien hoe hij het doet in zijn tweede seizoen. Volgend jaar zal er meer druk zijn en het wordt interessant om te zien hoe hij daar mee omgaat.
