Wolff geeft toe: "Lewis dineerde met Ferrari-kopstuk"

Het team van Mercedes is niet bezig met het beste seizoen uit hun bestaan, maar ze sloegen enkele maanden geleden welke een grote slag. Ze verlengden het contract van Lewis Hamilton en dat zorgde voor veel grote opluchting. Toto Wolff geeft aan dat Hamilton niet weg wilde, maar dat hij wel sprak met Ferrari.

Hamilton begon aan het huidige seizoen met een aflopend contract. Maandenlang ging het over de toekomst van Hamilton, maar bij Mercedes verwachtte men dat de Britse zevenvoudig wereldkampioen snel zou bijtekenen. Het duurde echter zeer lang en er gingen steeds meer geruchten rond over een mogelijke overstap van Hamilton naar Ferrari. Deze transfer kwam er niet van, maar Hamilton gaf later wel toe dat hij had gesproken met Ferrari.

Gesprekken

Volgens de Brit waren deze gesprekken niet serieus, maar hij gaf geen verdere details. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff geeft iets meer duidelijkheid bij La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Het duurde eventjes, maar het was duidelijk dat Lewis bij ons zou blijven. Een tijdje terug vertelde Lewis dat hij gedineerd met John Elkann, maar hij zei ook dat hij niet zou vertrekken. Toen dat gesprek met Ferrari in de media belandde, liet Lewis mij weer weten dat hij niet onderhandelde met andere teams."

Toekomst

Wolff is heel erg blij dat Hamilton zich aan zijn woord hield en dat hij gewoon bijtekende. Volgens de Oostenrijkse teambaas beschikt Mercedes nu over een sterke line-up voor de toekomst: "Ik heb geen enkel moment getwijfeld aan deze deal. We hebben George Russell ook nog minimaal twee jaar voor ons rijden. Hij is de toekomst, hij is na Lewis de volgende generatie. Wij zijn heel erg blij."

Lewis vond de ochtend daarna een paardenhoofd in zijn bed,want dit was eigenlijk een aanbod wat hij niet kon weigeren.Schijnt dat ze hem daarna nog hebben proberen over te halen om te gaan vissen.

  Waarom luncht hij met Elkann dan denk je? Voor de gezelligheid? Omdat Elkann hem wil bedanken dat hij een Ferrari gekocht heeft? Er is niet echt een reden dat ze als een soort van vrienden of een netwerkdiner hadden. 100% is een evt. overgang gesproken en heeft Hamilton aangehoord wat de opties waren. En vervolgens is of Elkann niet akkoord gegaan, of Hamilton niet. En waarschijnlijk dat laatste, omdat Elkann niet aan tafel gaat onderhandelen over (financiële) voorwaarden, en Hamilton niet Elkann hoeft te vertellen waarom hij voor Ferrari interessant is.

Hammie heeft dat al vaker gedaan, elke keer als zijn contract verlengd moest worden en hij nog een paar miljoentjes uit Toto wilde persen.
Die had natuurlijk gewoon moeten zeggen, als het jou niet aanstaat dan is daar het gat van de deur.
