Russell verraste Mercedes met vierde plaats in Qatar

Het team van Mercedes kende afgelopen weekend een tegenvallende Qatarese Grand Prix. Coureurs Lewis Hamilton en George Russell raakten elkaar in de eerste bocht van de race. De teleurstelling was groot, maar Russell vocht zich terug naar voren. Bij Mercedes had niemand verwacht dat hij weer goed zou scoren.

Hamilton en Russell kwamen allebei goed weg op het circuit van Losail. Ze duwden hun bolides naast de Red Bull van Max Verstappen, maar in de eerste bocht ging het mis. Hamilton gaf Russell weinig ruimte en daardoor raakten de twee teamgenoten elkaar. Hamilton verloor zijn achterband en hij eindigde in de grindbak. Terwijl Hamilton teleurgesteld terug ging naar de paddock, begon Russell met een inhaalrace. Hij kwam op grote achterstand als vierde over de streep.

Voorspellingen

Voor Mercedes was dit resultaat een grote verrassing. Volgens trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin had men dit niet zien aankomen. In de debrief op YouTube legt Shovlin het uit: "Aangezien we op de laatste plaats reden na het incident in de eerste ronde, gaven onze voorspellingen aan dat we amper punten konden scoren. Tijdens de race werden de voorspellingen steeds beter en beter en uiteindelijk zagen we wel aankomen dat hij als vierde over de lijn zou komen."

Racepace

Russell vocht meerdere duels uit, maar geen enkele coureur kon hem echt afstoppen. Shovlin zag dat de spreekwoordelijke zon steeds meer begon te schijnen: "Hij kon snel de sleutel-auto's inhalen. Toen hij eenmaal in de schone lucht reed, zagen we dat de racepace best goed was en dat hij daardoor zoveel plekken kon terugwinnen. Daarnaast deed ons strategie-team het ook goed door het meeste te halen uit een slechte situatie. De vierde plaats was voor hen een geweldige beloning."

ben niet zo'n liefhebber van die Russell, maar eerlijk is eerlijk, hier hij reed ijzersterk. En zeker als je in de eerste ronde schade oploopt en de pits moet opzoeken.

  Die pit is natuurlijk geen maatstaf. Safety car. Weet het niet zeker, maar er waren er zelfs die achter hem kwamen achter de safety car omdat ze ook de pit box opzochten.
  
  Russell reed een Verstappen-achtige inhaalrace inderdaad. Hoe vaak dat die niet van achteren moest komen ivm uitval, motor straffen, e.d. Erg goed race.
  Echter liep afgelopen weekend ook de reuzel uit mijn kont nadat hij breeduit brullend riep hoe geweldig hij was met die inhaalactie.
  Ik ga nooit fan van hem worden. Ook al is eigenlijk altijd zijn race craft leuk om te zien.

Hoewel vriend George hier niet kan rekenen op enige sympathie, behalve één man dan, kan je niet ontkennen dat hij wel degelijk getalenteerd is en toekomstige uitdager van Max.

  Afgelopen weekend liep bij mij de smurrie uit mijn achterwerk toen hij riep hoe geweldig die inhaalactie was. Aanvallende rijder, wat ik altijd graag zie. Maar fan ga ik nooit van hem worden. Ik hou liever een schone broek.
