FRECA: Antonelli kampioen na masterclass op nat Zandvoort

Andrea Kimi Antonelli heeft met een ware masterclass de titel geclaimd in het Formula Regional European by Alpine. De Mercedes-junior won in natte en zeer lastige omstandigheden de race in Zandvoort en dat was ruim voldoende voor het binnenhalen van het kampioenschap.

Antonelli begon vanaf P8. Een plekje daarachter zijn enige overgebleven concurrent, Martinius Stenshorne. De Italiaan moest vandaag twee punten uitlopen op zijn Noorse opponent om het kampioenschap veilig te stellen.

In de regen voelde Antonelli zich als een vis in het water. Het grote talent haalde met speels gemak de één en ander in op indrukwekkende wijze. Na een paar ronden lag de Mercedes-protogé al op de gewilde koppositie met Sternshorne op P7.

Met nog 17 minuten en 18 seconden op de klok werd de rode vlag gezwaaid na een flinke klapper een bocht verder na het Scheivlak waar drie wagens betrokken waren.

Na een lange onderbreking werd de race hervat. Het zonnetje was alweer aan het schijnen, maar de baan was nog nat. Na het zwaaien van de groene vlag nam Antonelli een comfortabele voorsprong. Die gaf de Italiaan niet meer uit handen en deklasseerde het hele veld. Fransman Marcus Armand finishte op meer dan tien seconden op Antonelli. Laurens van Hoepen zorgde met zijn tweede derde plek van het weekend voor een oranje tintje op het podium.

2024

Kersvers kampioen Antonelli wacht een gouden toekomst in de autosport. Italiaanse journalisten van Motorsport.com beweerden al eerder dat de 17-jarige coureur de Formule 3 overslaat en meteen doorstroomt naar de Formule 2, waar vanaf 2024 met nieuwe bolides worden gereden. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff zei op het gerucht dat er een beslissing wordt genomen na het FRECA-seizoen.

Het FRECA-kampioenschap eindigt volgende week zondag in Hockenheim, in het voor -en naprogramma van de DTM.

Was er gisteren even aan het kijken op het circuit. En bij zijn team Prema lopen al heel wat mensen met Mercedes kleding rond. Jammer van de openingsronde van Kas.
Antonelli is wel een talentje, ik ben benieuwd wat hij gaat doen in de toekomst. Ergens wel jammer dat hij voor Mercedes heeft gekozen. Mercedes staat er niet om bekend dat talenten snel doorstromen naar het F1 team. Aan de andere kant, als hij echt goed is dan komt hij er vast wel.

  Wat voor mij heel leuk was is dat ik gisteren Emerson Fittipaldi heb ontmoet. Die was daar om zijn zoon te begeleiden.

Na Lando Norris de eerste die ik weer wat volg in de juniorklassen. Beloofd een topper te worden, maar dan moet de groei blijven doorzetten.

En laat ik eerlijk zijn... De naam Kimi terug in F1 is meer iconisch dan sommige achternamen terug in F1.

  Ik denk dat Prema wel graag ruimte maakt voor Antonelli. Een italiaan in een prema met geldsupport van Benz en de kans om weer een italiaan naar de F1 grid te brengen...

Verschoor gaat ondanks een concrete aanbieding van MP terug naar Trident. Heeft hier een aantal weken geleden getekend. Kas Haverkort gaat of naar de F3 of hij gaat zijn focus verleggen naar Amerika.
