Mercedes-coureurs worstelden met 'grillige' auto in kwalificatie

Mercedes kwam vorig weekend in Austin sterk voor de dag op zaterdag en zondag, maar moest in de kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Mexico genoegen nemen met een P6 voor Lewis Hamilton en een P8 voor George Russell. Volgens beide coureurs werkt de Mercedes niet optimaal met het oog op zondag.

''Ik heb het hele weekend met de auto geworsteld en het was een beetje een nachtmerrie om te rijden'', begon de zevenvoudig kampioen in een online persbericht van Mercedes. ''We hebben moeten proberen de de puzzelstukjes bij elkaar te brengen en we hebben goede veranderingen aangebracht in de kwalificatie, zodat ik veel gelukkiger was met de auto.''

''Q1 en Q2 zagen er niet slecht uit, vooral de tweede run in Q2. Maar de auto is gewoon heel piekerig - soms zit hij in de ruit, soms niet. En in die laatste ronde kon ik er niets meer uithalen. De race wordt absoluut een uitdaging: we zullen de banden en de remmen oververhitten, dus het zal niet gemakkelijk zijn om tegen de auto's om ons heen te strijden. Ik weet niet echt wat voor soort race ik kan verwachten, maar het zal op het scherp van de snede zijn.''

Teamgenoot Russell oogde teleurgesteld en verklaarde wat er ontbrak tijdens de kwalificatie. ''Het was een beetje jammer om op P8 te eindigen, omdat we op punten tekenen van een sterk tempo lieten zien, maar we leverden niet op toen het erop aankwam'', zei de Brit. ''Het ontbrak ons aan consistentie vandaag - sommige runs waren we sterk, andere niet, dus het was een verwarrend beeld. Tijdens de laatste run hadden we een set nieuwe banden en probeerden we tijdens de laatste ronde iets anders, maar het werkte niet en de banden zaten niet in het raamwerk.''

''Wat de race betreft, het zal moeilijk zijn vanaf P8 - de remmen zullen moeten worden beheerd en de PU-temperaturen zijn ook altijd een uitdaging. We kwamen hier in de verwachting dat we competitief zouden zijn en ik hoop dat we vooruitgang kunnen boeken in de race, maar het zal niet gemakkelijk zijn'', sloot Russell af.

Een volledig nieuwe vloer is met dit concept ook echt een grote update. Dat kost dus tijd om die te finetunen en onder alle omstandigheden werkend te krijgen.
Kijkend naar de minisectoren op vrijdag en zaterdag zaten ze er idd soms helemaal bij en andere keren totaal niet.
Op zondag wordt er echter veel minder hard gereden en hoeft de grens niet zo opgezocht te worden.
Ik denk dat Lewis “gewoon” P3 gaat pakken achter Max en Checo en voor de Ferrari’s.
