Newey denkt niet aan pensioen: "Doe ik pas als ik niet nuttig meer ben"

Adrian Newey is nog steeds één van de belangrijkste mensen binnen het team van Red Bull Racing. De Britse topontwerper wil nog lang niet stoppen met werken, maar hij weet wel precies wanneer hij met pensioen wil gaan. Newey wil pas stoppen als men zegt dat hij niet meer nuttig is.

Newey is al sinds jaar en dag betrokken bij het team van Red Bull Racing. De Brit werkte daarvoor ook voor andere teams, maar bij Red Bull is hij uitgegroeid tot een soort legende. De ontwerper stond aan de wieg van de wereldtitels van Sebastian Vettel en Max Verstappen, hij was immers verantwoordelijk voor de kampioenswagens van beide mannen. De wagen waarmee Red Bull dit jaar domineert, is dus ook afkomstig uit zijn hoofd.

Andretti

Newey geeft aan dat hij nooit had verwacht dat hij nu nog zou werken. De Brit is daar zeer eerlijk over, maar in gesprek met The Telegraph legt hij ook uit waarom hij nog werkt: "Ik denk dat ik begin vijftig was toen ik dacht dat ik op mijn zestigste wel aan het strand zou liggen. De realiteit is echter dat ik mij dan zou gaan vervelen. Ik weet nog dat ik met Mario Andretti werkte, ik was zijn engineer toen hij 47 was en hij was toen ook nog steeds competitief."

Van nut zijn

Andretti heeft Newey een aantal wijze lessen geleerd. De Britse topontwerper gebruikt deze lessen nu nog steeds bij zijn besluitvorming: "Later begon Mario ongelukken te krijgen en was hij minder competitief. Ik kwam hem daarna tegen en hij zei dat hij niet meer zo scherp was, maar dat hij wel zou blijven rijden zolang mensen hem een stoeltje zouden geven en hij ervan zou genieten. Ik denk dat dit een goede manier is om de dingen te bekijken. Als mensen mij zeggen dat ik niet meer van nut ben, dan moet ik dat aannemen. Ik wil het team niet in de steek laten."

Dus Newey werkt nog 30 jaar voor Red Bull, gaat niet met pensioen want blijft tot nut? Da's vervelend voor de concurrentie lijkt me...

Redbull is slim, ze geven Newey alle ruimte om de dingen te laten doen die hij leuk vind. Op deze manier hou je het lang vol. Niet meer bij alle races aanwezig hoeven te zijn, leuke projecten naast de F1 kunnen doen, en ook tijd voor de hobby’s.
Hij heeft mensen onder zich die hij vertrouwt, en zijn ideeën begrijpen en kunnen aanvullen. Waché moet men niet onderschatten, deze man is minstens net zo belangrijk voor RBR.

  en hij spendeert zijn hele leven al veel tijd aan die jongen.
  Hij heeft twee jaar bij Van Amersfoort Racing gereden,
  in de Super Formula, DTM en nog ander race klassen.

  Dat wist ik niet. Excuses. Hij heeft er dus zelfs vier! Vreemd, hij toont altijd alleen foto's van zijn zoon Harrison. Alsof die andere drie niet bestaan.

  He married his second wife Marigold in 1992 and they separated in 2010.
  They had a daughter Imogen and son Harrison.
  Newey has been married to Amanda "Mandy" Smerczak since August 2017.
