Russell ziet kansen: "We gaan iets onbekends aan"

Dit weekend komen de coureurs voor het eerst in actie op het gloednieuwe stratencircuit in Las Vegas. Niemand weet precies wat ze kunnen verwachten van de baan en van de omstandigheden. George Russell heeft er in ieder geval zin in en hij ziet ook kansen voor een goed resultaat.

Russell is zeker niet de enige coureur die zin heeft in de Grand Prix in het centrum van de gokstad. Vrijwel alle coureurs hebben zich positief uitgesproken over het evenement, maar geen van hen weet hoe de verhoudingen zullen liggen in de stad in de staat Nevada. Aangezien het gaat om een stratencircuit met veel lange rechte stukken, de temperaturen laag zullen zijn en er wordt gereden in de avond, wordt het een weekend vol uitdagingen.

Onbekend terrein

Mercedes-coureur George Russell heeft daar in ieder geval heel erg veel zin in. De Britse coureur kent de uitdagingen en die wil hij met alles wat hij in zich heeft aangaan. Hij is benieuwd hoe zijn team zal gaan presteren in Las Vegas en hij sprak zich uit bij een event van sponsor IWC: "We gaan echt iets onbekends aan. Het is een race in Vegas en het is ook nog eens een nachtrace. Daarnaast wordt het veel kouder dan wij momenteel gewend zijn."

Kansen

Russell denkt dat vooral de lage temperaturen een belangrijke rol gaan spelen in de race. De Brit vraagt zich vooral af hoe de krachtbronnen van Mercedes het gaan doen in deze omstandigheden: "We hebben dat nog niet getest, het is echt onder de limiet op het gebied van de temperaturen. Er zijn zoveel dingen waar we van moeten leren, dat geeft ons een kans om beter voor de dag te komen dan onze concurrenten."

Moet hij wel de achtervleugel van 44 vasthouden maar dat was alleen in pace ferme een probleem toch?

Ik verwacht helemaal niks met deze wagen en de bandenopwarm problemen in de kwalificaties. Enige voordeel is dat je 3 trainingen hebt voor de afstelling. Voor de rest verwacht ik een heel zwaar weekend voor Mercedes.

Mercedes…… een team met 1 coureur die het net niet meer heeft, 1 coureur die het niet niet heeft en een teamleider die zijn successen alleen heeft gehad op wat anderen voor hem opgebouwd hebben en het nu niet meer weet

Als de concurrenten minder hoeven te leren omdat zij de kennis al in huis hebben is dat juist een voordeel (voorsprong).
Vermoed dat Lompe George een filosofische uitspraak wou doen maar hij moet duidelijk nog ff in de leer bij zijn teamgenoot, de wereldkampioen van vroeger...
