Aankomend weekend staat in Abu Dhabi de laatste Grand Prix van het jaar op het programma. In de eerste vrije training zal de helft van het veld bestaan uit nieuwe namen. Vrijwel alle teams kiezen er namelijk voor om een rookie de kans te geven aan het einde van het seizoen.

Sinds vorig jaar is het de regel dat alle teams minimaal twee keer een rookie moeten inzetten tijdens een vrije training. Veel teams hebben nog niet aan deze eis voldaan, want negen van de tien teams zetten rookies in op het circuit van Yas Marina. Alleen AlphaTauri kiest er niet voor om een nieuwe naam in te zetten. Red Bull Racing kiest zelfs voor twee nieuwe gezichten: Formule E-kampioen Jake Dennis en Formule 2-coureur Isack Hadjar.

Het team van Mercedes kiest voor de diensten van hun eigen talent Frederik Vesti. Ook Ferrari (Robert Shwartzman), Alpine (Jack Doohan), Aston Martin (Felipe Drugovich) en Alfa Romeo (Theo Pourchaire) kiezen voor eigen talenten die al vaker vrije trainingen hebben gereden. McLaren zet hun IndyCar-coureur Patricio O'Ward in en Haas kiest voor Ferrari-talent Oliver Bearman. Het team van Williams laat hun talent Zak O'Sullivan debuteren tijdens een officiële sessie in de Formule 1.

  Niet heel vreemd. De laatst raceweekenden waren veelal sprintweekenden of op onbekend terrein of lastige omstandigheden. Van A.D. hebben de teams veel data en zou vooraf de verwachting kunnen zijn dat er minder tot misschien wel niets meer op het spel zou staan. Dan zou je makkelijker een FP1 kunnen "missen"

  Bij Red Bull speelt Lawson. Die telt niet meer als rookie voor een VT bij Red Bull. Die heeft voor SAT meer dan 1 race gereden. SAT heeft voldaan zonder een rookie in te zetten. De eerste VT van dit jaar was nog de Vries officieel rookie en Lawson heeft de tweede keer ingevuld.
  
  De enige niet bekende baan bij de teams was overigens Vegas. Op alle andere banen was men al geweest in F1. Ik doe dit uit mijn hoofd, kan er 1 gemist hebben.
  Er zijn echt voldoende mogelijkheden geweest. Verstappen wa sal lang kampioen en ook voor de constructeurs was het snel in de pocket. Ik denk echt dat Lawson de issue was en dat ze niet zo snel een vervanger voor hem wisten te bedenken.
  
  Wie weet krijgt Red Bull hierdoor de setup niet voor elkaar. En dan kan Norris winnen. Zie het al helemaal voor me bij de commentatoren: McLaren heeft het gat helemaal gedicht!

  "SAT heeft voldaan zonder een rookie in te zetten." de Vries en Lawson hebben in dezelfde auto gereden. Maar in beide auto's moeten de teams een rookie inzetten. Daarom hebben ze in Mexico Hadjar in de auto van Yuki laten rijden
