Russell opent jacht op Red Bull: "Geen makkelijke opdracht"

George Russell is bezig met een lastig seizoen in de Formule 1. De Britse Mercedes-coureur staat ver achter op zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton en hij kan de Red Bulls al helemaal niet bijhouden. Russell wil in 2024 wel de degens kunnen kruisen met Red Bull.

Russell wist vorig jaar in zijn eerste volledige seizoen voor Mercedes zijn sterke teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton te verslaan. Dit jaar is alles echter anders. Russell staat met 160 WK-punten slechts op de achtste plaats in het wereldkampioenschap, zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton staat met 232 WK-punten op de derde plaats. Russells achterstand op de Red Bull-coureurs is nog groter.

Achterstand

Russell keek in Abu Dhabi terug naar zijn huidige seizoen. De Britse coureur baalt van zijn achterstand op Hamilton en tijdens de persconferentie was hij eerlijk: "Ik ga daar in de winter zeker naar kijken. De resultaten kwamen vorig jaar zo makkelijk en we eindigden vaker in de top vijf dan wie dan ook. Dit jaar heb ik het idee dat ik sneller ben geworden in de kwalificatie en in de race. We hebben wel meer competitie met McLaren en Aston Martin."

Dominantste auto ooit

Russell denkt dan ook het liefst aan het aankomende seizoen. Hij richt zijn pijlen voor 2024 op Red Bull Racing, maar hij weet dat dit een lastige opgave is: "Deze uitdaging is voor iedereen enorm. We proberen allemaal één van de dominantste auto's uit de geschiedenis van de Formule 1 te verslaan. Dat is geen makkelijke opdracht en iedereen moet samenwerken en alles geven. Dan wordt het vanzelf duidelijk wat dit oplevert. We gaan de winter in een veel betere positie in dan de vorige keer. We hopen dat er geen hindernissen zijn."

  Toen hij bij Williams reed was hij vaak erg snel in de kwalificatie, maar maakte zo nu en dan best grote blunders op de zondag.
  
  Helaas voor hem is dat laatste er nog steeds niet uit.

klopt, die andere was van je maatje de afgelopen jaren dus je bent net te laat ingestapt. Daarnaast gaat het niet altijd om snelheid maar ook om slimheid. Russel maakt nog veel fouten terwijl hij dan hoog in de punten kan eindigen. ik kan zo een paar races bedenken waarvan hij nu 30/40 punten extra had.
