Piastri levert goede prestatie af: "Echt geen idee wat de racepace is"

Oscar Piastri sloot zijn laatste kwalificatiesessie van zijn debuutseizoen af met de derde tijd. De Australische McLaren-coureur reed weer eens een goede sessie, maar hij moet zich waarschijnlijk wel bij de stewards gaan melden voor een momentje met Pierre Gasly. Hij heeft geen idee hoe goed zijn racepace is.

Piastri is bezig met een ongekend goed debuutseizoen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. De Australiër liet in de kwalificatie op het circuit van Yas Marina weer eens zien wat hij in huis heeft. Hij ging als de brandweer en terwijl zijn teamgenoot Lando Norris een foutje maakte, ging hij wel goed verder. Wel had hij een momentje waarbij hij mogelijk de Alpine van Pierre Gasly blokkeerde. Zijn derde plek is dus nog lang niet zeker.

Na afloop van de kwalificatie mocht hij zich in ieder geval melden in het parc ferme voor de gebruikelijke interviews. Hij sprak zich hier uit bij interviewer van dienst Jolyon Palmer: "Het was een moeilijke sessie, het is extreem krap dit weekend. De pace is er wel, maar we maken gewoon veel foutjes. In de laatste ronde maakte in een foutje, het moest echt een geweldige laatste bocht zijn om iets te bereiken. Ik heb geen idee wat de racepace is. Voor iedereen is het hetzelfde liedje. Ik denk dat iedereen maximaal vijf rondjes achter elkaar heeft gereden dit weekend."
