Balende Sainz verklaart opvallende strategie: "Pakte niet goed uit"

Carlos Sainz sloot afgelopen weekend zijn seizoen op een teleurstellende manier af. Na een rampzalige kwalificatie probeerde Ferrari de schade te beperken met een dappere strategie. Het plannetje mislukte en Sainz legt uit waarom zijn team voor deze opvallende strategie koos.

Sainz kende een rampzalig weekend in Abu Dhabi. Hij crashte hard tijdens de tweede vrije training, hij viel al af in het eerste gedeelte van de kwalificatie en hij kon de race niet uitrijden door motorproblemen. Sainz startte de race op de harde band en men leek voor een eenstopper te gaan. Ferrari gaf Sainz echter een vers setje harde banden en ze gokten op een Safety Car. Deze kwam echter niet waardoor Sainz in de laatste rondjes weer naar binnen kwam, maar uitviel met motorproblemen.

Teleurgesteld

Na afloop baalde Sainz als een stekker. De Spaanse Ferrari-coureur sloot het seizoen op een rampzalige manier af en dat legt hij uit aan Motorsport.com: "Ik ben eerlijk gezegd heel teleurgesteld. Ik ben niet blij, gezien hoe weinig het scheelde in het constructeurskampioenschap. We zullen de koppen bij elkaar steken en kijken wat we vandaag beter hadden kunnen doen en wat er aan de hand was, want het tempo en het algemene gevoel met de auto waren niet goed."

Safety Car

Sainz staat achter de dappere strategie van Ferrari. De Spanjaard legt dan ook duidelijk uit waarom zijn team hiervoor had gekozen: "We begonnen op de harde banden in de verwachting dat deze ons aan een eenstopper zou helpen. We hebben dit jaar heel vaak gezien dat we enorm worstelen als we op de hardere compound staan. Dat was nu ook het geval. We hadden vanaf de zestiende plek niets te verliezen en we hebben het geprobeerd, maar uiteindelijk pakte het niet goed uit. Toen we doorhadden dat we weinig kans maakten op punten, besloten we te gokken op een Safety Car."

  Hierbij de strategie van Red Bull : "Max was van een ander niveau dit jaar vooral op het gebied van de auto, strategie en banden. Tijdens de race hadden we de strategen niet eens nodig, want het leek erop dat Max de strategie bepaalde voor hemzelf en Sergio Perez! (Hannah Schmitz ) wees ze er echter op dat Verstappen duurder is dan zij."

Op de een of andere manier had Carlos het totaal niet. VT1 net zo snel als Schwartzmann,
VT2 gecrasht, VT3 als 20ste (Charles 5e), kwalificatie als 16e (Charles 2e).
Tijdens de race kon hij Stroll niet bijhouden met dezelfde banden. Dat is gewoon niet best.

Externe factoren hielpen waarschijnlijk hem ook niet, maar dit was gewoon niet goed.
Misschien dat Las Vegas hem toch dieper heeft geraakt dan eerst gedacht.
Tijd om dan even goed vakantie te nemen en met nieuwe energie terugkomen.

  Wat ik niet snapte na de dramatische kwalificatie dat ze de wagen van Sainz niet vanuit de pits starte, nieuwe motor erin en dan standje net niet ontploffen en gewoon stampen.

  Denk dat ze een beetje met de budgetcap zitten door putdeksel-gate.
  Deze grap zou volgens Italiaanse media 2 miljoen euro hebben gekost.
  
  Vandaar dat Charles mogelijk ook geen donuts mocht doen op het eind om de onderdelen te besparen.
