Brown onthult versterkte samenwerking tussen McLaren en Mercedes

Vorige week werd bekend dat het team van McLaren voorlopig nog gebruik blijft maken van klantenmotoren van Mercedes. Volgens CEO Zak Brown heeft McLaren een goede deal getekend. De Amerikaan stelt zelfs dat zijn team nu wordt betrokken bij het ontwikkelingsproces van de nieuwe krachtbron.

Vlak voor de seizoensfinale in Abu Dhabi werd bekend dat McLaren tot en met 2030 zal blijven rijden met motoren van Mercedes. De twee merken werken al zeer lang samen en ze zijn allebei zeer tevreden. Het was dan ook geen grote verrassing dat het contract werd verlengd. Dit betekent dus ook dat McLaren onder de nieuwe technische reglementen die in 2026 ingaan, zal rijden met Mercedes-motoren.

Wereldtitel

McLaren-CEO Zak Brown barst van de ambities. De Amerikaan stelt dat zijn team een zeer goede deal heeft besloten met Mercedes en bij Speedcafe legt hij dit uit: "Ik ben van mening dat je een wereldtitel kan winnen met een klantenmotor. Zonder te veel in te gaan op de details, maar op de gebieden waar er verschillen zijn tussen een fabrieksteam en een klantenteam, hebben we dingen aangekaart en hebben we een mooie overeenkomst gesloten."

Ontwikkelingsproces

Brown stelt dat McLaren nu meer betrokken is bij het ontwikkelen van de nieuwe krachtbronnen. Hij zegt dat McLaren nu een stoel aan tafel heeft gekregen: "Het betekent dat we meer invloed hebben en meer dingen weten tijdens het vroege ontwikkelingsproces van hen. We krijgen dus niet zomaar een afgemaakt product aangeleverd zonder dat we weten hoe het er uitziet. We krijgen al vroeg te horen welke kant ze opgaan. We weten dus hoe we een auto moeten ontwerpen rondom de Power Unit. We beginnen niet veel later dan het fabrieksteam."

En dan maar klagen over de samenwerking tussen de 2 Red Bull Teams terwijl je dit zelf ook meer en meer gaat doen met Mercedes.

  Voor Toto Wolff was het belangrijk dat het probleem met de W14 snel gevonden zou worden en daarin was Aston Martin erg belangrijk. Het Britse team neemt een aantal onderdelen af van Mercedes, waaronder de achterophanging, de versnellingsbak en de motoren. Omdat Aston zo goed presteerde, wist Mercedes dat deze onderdelen in ieder geval niet het probleem waren. Hun focus kon gelijk verlegt worden op de andere aspecten van de auto.

Mercedes Benz sorteert voor op een volledige verkoop van het Mercedes AMG Formule 1 team en het aanblijven als ‘alleen’ motorenleverancier. De geruchten over een exit gaan al langer. En dan Toto’s team net als McLaren ook gewoon een klant die Mercedes Benz motoren afneemt. Net zo belangrijk dus als McLaren is en wellicht ook Williams als die Mercedes motoren blijft gebruiken. Al zie ik die nog wel eens switchen naar Renault of Honda.

MIsschien kan hij Mercedes een beetje pushen richtin een 'size zero engine', aangezien de 'betrokkenheid' met Honda eerder ook zo'n succes was!
