Hamilton vindt 2023 geen slecht seizoen

Lewis Hamilton kende dit jaar een teleurstellend seizoen in de Formule 1. Hij kon niet meevechten om de zeges en hij had moeite met zijn Mercedes-bolide. Hamilton blijft echter strijdvaardig en hij wil niet zeggen dat dit zijn slechtste seizoen uit zijn loopbaan was.

Na een teleurstellend 2022 wilde Mercedes dit jaar gaan toeslaan. Ze wilden de strijd met Red Bull Racing aangaan, maar ze kwamen van een koude kermis thuis. Red Bull was veel te snel en Mercedes wist de achterstand niet goed te maken. Hamilton worstelde meerdere keren met zijn auto en hij leek niet in zijn sas te zijn. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen won voor het tweede seizoen op rij geen Grand Prix, maar hij werd wel derde in het wereldkampioenschap.

Misvatting

Critici stellen dat dit Hamiltons slechtste seizoen was in de sport. De Brit is zelf van mening dat dit niet het geval is en hij legt dit uit aan Motorsport.com: "Ik denk dat het een misvatting is. Ik had ook zware jaren als jonge coureur. De auto van 2009 was bijvoorbeeld verschrikkelijk, maar we konden er nog wel een race mee winnen door een twee update. Ook de seizoenen 2010 en 2011 waren niet bijzonder goed. Het ene jaar had ik zelf moeite en in het andere jaar was de auto echt niet goed."

Droogte

Hamilton weet ook dat de cijfers niet liegen. De Brit wist in al zijn jaren in de Formule 1 te winnen, behalve in 2022 en dit jaar. Hij geeft toe dat dit een pijnlijke statistiek is: "Als je kijkt naar mijn successen, dan is dit de langste periode in mijn loopbaan waarin in droogsta qua zeges. Als je de overwinningen in 2009, 2010 en 2011 wegdenkt, dan zijn die seizoenen gewoon veel minder goed."

Een blik op de cijfers ondersteunt de bewering van Hamilton slechts gedeeltelijk. In 2009 eindigde de Brit als vijfde met twee overwinningen en nog eens zeven podiumplaatsen. Een jaar later vocht hij zelfs tot het einde van het seizoen voor het wereldkampioenschap rijders met drie overwinningen, vijf tweede plaatsen en twee derde plaatsen. En in 2011 waren de resultaten vergelijkbaar met drie overwinningen en drie tweede plaatsen.

Met de introductie van het nieuwe aerodynamische concept in 2022 konden Mercedes en Hamilton niet meer met een vergelijkbare frequentie om overwinningen strijden. In 2022 eindigde de Brit slechts als zesde met negen podiumplaatsen – de slechtste eindpositie uit zijn carrière.
Bovendien was het Russell, die net bij het team was gekomen, en niet de in het team gevestigde wereldkampioen Hamilton, die in Brazilië de enige Mercedes-overwinning van het seizoen had behaald.

Hamilton ziet zichzelf als persoonlijk nog verder volwassen geworden
De cijfers voor 2023 lezen veel vriendelijker met zes podiumplaatsen, één pole position, derde plaats in het wereldkampioenschap en een duidelijk verslagen Russell.

"Ik denk dat ik op mentaal vlak veel heb geleerd, hoe ik mezelf mentaal fit kan houden en positief kan blijven", legt Hamilton uit. Hij schrijft deze ontwikkeling vooral toe aan nieuwe "tools" die hij de afgelopen twee jaar heeft verworven en voegde deze toe aan zijn "arsenaal".
Ik ben 38, bijna 39, en ik voel me geweldig in mijn lichaam. Dat komt ook door de nieuwe hulpmiddelen die ik de afgelopen twee jaar heb verworven." Hij besteedt nu ook zijn tijd buiten het circuit anders, wat betekent dat hij “veel beter werk” kan leveren als het gaat om “gefocust blijven en energie opbouwen”.

Maar Hamilton heeft ook geen twee jaar zonder overwinning achtergelaten: “Als je twee van zulke moeilijke seizoenen hebt meegemaakt, kom je automatisch op het punt waarop je jezelf afvraagt: ‘Ben ik het of de auto? Heb je iets dat nodig is om succesvol te zijn of ben je het kwijtgeraakt?' "Pas als alles samenkomt, gebeurt er iets magisch. Dan ontwikkelen de bestuurder en de auto die speciale vonk waar je altijd naar op zoek bent."
Hamilton benadrukt dat zelftwijfel normaal is, zelfs voor een recordwereldkampioen: "Ik ben nog steeds een mens en iedereen die zegt dat hij of zij niet aan zichzelf twijfelt, houdt zichzelf voor de gek."

Na 22 was er in 23 weer geen enkele overwinning voor de goat, ik verwacht in 24 nycks meer dan een bull van hetzelfde gemekker van Ham en Toto als dat we in die afgelopen seizoenen hebben gehoord.
