Vasseur vindt Amerikaanse coureur belangrijker dan Amerikaans team

Het team van Andretti heeft nog altijd de ambitie om in de nabije toekomst deel te nemen aan de Formule 1. De huidige teams zitten daar echter niet op te wachten. Ferrari-teambaas Frédéric Vasseur stelt namelijk dat een succesvolle Amerikaanse coureur belangrijker is dan een Amerikaans team.

Eerder dit jaar opende autosportfederatie FIA de inschrijvingen voor mogelijke nieuwe teams. Alleen Andretti Cadillac kwam door het strenge selectieproces heen. Dat betekent echter nog niet dat ze mogen gaan deelnemen aan de sport, want de FOM moet de plannen ook nog goedkeuren. De huidige teams zijn over het algemeen geen fan van de komst van Andretti. Alleen bij McLaren lijken ze hier echt een voorstander van te zijn.

Verstappen

Ferrari-teambaas Frédéric Vasseur ziet het belang van een nieuw Amerikaans team niet. De Fransman wijst in gesprek met de internationale media naar iets anders: "We hebben het over de berichtgeving in het land van het team gehad, maar ik denk niet dat dit de juiste benadering is. Het is belangrijk dat de Formule 1 succesvol is in een land waarvan de coureurs succesvol zijn. Eén van de grootste successen voor de Formule 1 is Nederland omdat ze Verstappen hebben."

Coureurs

Vasseur is dan ook van mening dat het veel belangrijker is dat er snel een Amerikaanse superster wordt gevonden. De Ferrari-teambaas is duidelijk: "Het draait meer om de coureurs dan om het team en de nationaliteit van het desbetreffende team. Je hebt Haas al als Amerikaans team. Als je het hebt over Andretti, dan willen ze de sport betreden met hetzelfde systeem als Haas. Als we succesvol willen zijn in de Verenigde Staten, dan denk dat het belangrijker is om op zoek te gaan naar Amerikaanse coureurs."

Ik denk dat weinig Amerikanen warm lopen voor Logan Sargeant en dat succes belangrijker is , of het nu een coureur of een team is. Pas als er succes is zullen Amerikanen er achter gaan staan.

Qua exposure: Zeker! Echter is de kans dat er een Amerikaanse coureur nu opstaat is nihil. Cadillac heeft veel meer kans op succes binnen 10 jaar dan dat in de aankomende 10 jaar een Amerikaanse F1 coureur opstaat

Vasseur gebruikt Nederland als voorbeeld, waarom de coureur belangrijker is dan de nationaliteit van een team... maar dat is compleet misverstand, natuurlijk.

Want Nederlanders zijn knettergek met hun Oranje gewapper.

Als je kijkt naar de traditie, waar de sport op voortbestaat, dan moet je eerder kijken naar Italië en Ferrari, of naar Engeland en Silverstone : teams en evenementen die de traditie voortdragen, ook als deze of gene coureur, Amerikaan of Nederlander, er mee ophoudt.

Dus NEE. We hebben eerder een Amerikaans team nodig. Wel met een Amerikaanse coureur graag, maar dat spreekt dan wel weer vóór.
