Wolff trots op race in Austin ondanks diskwalificatie

Het team van Mercedes kende dit jaar een lastig seizoen in de Formule 1. De Duitse renstal werd wel tweede in het constructeurskampioenschap en daar waren ze trots op. Toto Wolff is vooral trots op de race in Austin omdat Lewis Hamilton daar Max Verstappen bij wist te houden.

Mercedes wilde dit jaar eigenlijk meevechten om de zeges, maar dat plannetje mislukte. Voor het tweede seizoen op rij konden ze geen echte strijd uitvechten met Red Bull Racing. De Oostenrijkse renstal was veel te snel en dat zorgde voor een flinke teleurstelling bij Mercedes. Toch wil teambaas Toto Wolff niet bij de pakken neer gaan zitten, hij zag namelijk wel een aantal lichtpuntjes tijdens het seizoen.

Raceleider

Wolff wijst bijvoorbeeld naar de Amerikaanse Grand Prix in Austin. Lewis Hamilton kon hier raceleider Max Verstappen goed volgen. Na afloop werd hij alleen wel gediskwalificeerd. In de review van 2023 van Mercedes spreekt Wolff zich uit: "Het klinkt misschien raar aangezien we daar werden gediskwalificeerd, maar de race in Austin was volgens mij onze beste van het jaar. We hadden een pakket dat goed werkte en we joegen op de raceleider."

Beste weekend

Wolff begrijpt heel goed dat veel mensen wijzen naar de diskwalificatie van Hamilton in de desbetreffende race. De Oostenrijker ziet het echter iets anders: "Je kan wel zeggen dat we zijn gediskwalificeerd omdat de auto te laag was afgesteld, maar de echte performance was er daar wel en het was ook nog eens een fijn weekend. Ik heb altijd gezegd dat ik liever een snelle auto heb die niet goed is afgesteld. Natuurlijk moet je wel de finish halen, maar over het algemeen was dat ons beste weekend."

In het vervolg gewoon de auto niet goed afstellen en gokken op diskwalificatie, veel succes her Toto.

"... en we joegen op de raceleider" En die raceleider moest voor de zekerheid voor iedere bocht een stukkie eerder op zijn rem omdat hij niet wist of zijn remmen ook echt werkten als hij het pedaal intrapte.

Tja, dat heb je jaren gehad maar dankzij de voorsprong met de motor konden jullie dat mooi verbloemen.

Ga nu eerst maar eens een echt goede auto ontwerpen.

Top hoor, dat je met een illegale wagen goed kon volgen. Goed om te lezen dat Wolff z'n verwachtingen heeft bijgesteld en hier blij mee is.

Ik snap eigenlijk niet waarom hij juist op die race trots was. Hamilton kon in de buurt komen omdat Verstappen grote issues had met de remmen en daardoor niet de banden kon goedhouden. Hamilton was ook niet in staat te versnellen. Verstappen ging steeds langzamer.
GPS data liet zien dat Verstappen in 5 rondes een verval had van een seconde. Het laatste rondje was weer ietsje sneller door een drs van een achterblijver. Hamilton was daar wel vlak. Maar dat heeft de Mercedes al een tijd, die vlakke rondetijden. Vooral in handen van Hamilton.
