AlphaTauri geeft grote fout over ophanging toe

De teams van AlphaTauri en Red Bull Racing gaan in het aanstaande seizoen nauwer met elkaar samenwerken. AlphaTauri zal dan ook gaan rijden met de ophanging van Red Bull in 2024. Peter Bayer geeft toe dat zijn team een fout maakte door hier dit jaar niet voor te kiezen.

AlphaTauri kende dit jaar een lastige start van het seizoen. De Italiaanse renstal reed hopeloos rond in het achterveld. Achter de schermen rommelde het, want het Red Bull-concern dacht er zelfs aan om het team te verkopen. Uiteindelijk besloot men om de samenwerking tussen Red Bull Racing en AlphaTauri te verbeteren. AlphaTauri krijgt volgend jaar dan ook de beschikking over een aantal Red Bull-onderdelen, waaronder dus de ophanging.

Verkeerde keuze

Dit jaar besloot men dat niet te doen. AlphaTauri ontwikkelde zelf een ophanging, maar dat bleek niet de juiste keuze te zijn. AlphaTauri CEO Peter Bayer geeft in gesprek met Motorsport.com aan dat dit inderdaad een verkeerde beslissing was: "De initiële keuze om onze eigen weg te gaan met dat onderdeel, was een fout. De mensen die deze keuze toen hebben genomen zijn inmiddels niet meer bij ons werkzaam."

Keuze

Bayer begrijpt echter wel dat men deze keuze heeft gemaakt. De CEO neemt het ze dan ook niet helemaal kwalijk, maar hij is wel kritisch: "Ik denk dat de engineers heel wat redenen hebben voor waarom je bepaalde dingen zelf moet doen, maar iedereen in de paddock begreep dat met deze nieuwe regels. Iedereen begreep ook dat de nieuwe downforce-patronen van de ophanging erg belangrijk zijn. Je hebt de vloer en je hebt de ophanging. Als die twee niet met elkaar samenwerken, dan kun je net zo goed niet de baan op gaan."
