Het Formule 1-seizoen zit er alweer een aantal weken op. Terwijl het jaar op zijn einde loopt, zijn de teams allang bezig met het nieuwe seizoen. GPToday.net kijkt nog één keer naar de prestaties van de coureurs in 2023. Vandaag in deel zestien: Carlos Sainz, reuzendoder.

Consistent

Carlos Sainz kende dit jaar niet het beste seizoen uit zijn Formule 1-carrière. De Spaanse Ferrari-coureur had het soms heel zwaar, maar hij flikte ook iets wat niemand anders is gelukt in 2023. Hij was namelijk de enige die dit seizoen de Red Bulls wist te verslaan in een Grand Prix. Verder was het geen geweldige jaargang voor Sainz.

Hij verloor namelijk de onderlinge strijd van zijn teamgenoot Charles Leclerc en daarnaast had hij ook een aantal lastige weekenden. Hij begon het seizoen met een vierde en een zesde plaats. Op een lastig weekend in Australië na scoorde hij elk weekend punten. In België viel hij uit, maar hij had wel WK-punten gepakt in de sprintrace. Het was een goed trackrecord, maar een podiumplaats had hij nog niet gepakt.

Zijn consistente resultaten hadden hem dus niet meer dan een handvol kruimels opgeleverd. Ferrari had geen stappen gezet en in de tweede helft van het seizoen moest men op zoek gaan naar een oplossing. Een vijfde plaats in Nederland was een goed begin, maar daarna trapte Sainz echt het gas in.

Singapore

Op het thuiscircuit van Ferrari in Monza liet hij de Tifosi juichen door als derde over de finish te komen. Eén race later was het feest echt compleet. In de straten van Singapore kampte Red Bull Racing met een vormdip. Red Bull was tot dan toe onverslaanbaar, maar nu was het ineens kommer en kwel bij de Oostenrijkse renstal

Sainz rook bloed en hij zette het weekend naar zijn hand. In een extreem spannende kwalificatie greep hij de pole position en dat was de eerste slag. Op de Singaporese zondag hield hij zijn hoofd koel in de benauwde straten. Hij profiteerde van het feit dat Ferrari voor een alternatieve strategie koos voor zijn teamgenoot Charles Leclerc.

In de slotfase van de race vond Sainz zich terug in een absurd spannend duel om de zege. Hij reed nog wel aan de leiding maar, achter hem volgden de Britten Lando Norris, George Russell en Lewis Hamilton. De drie coureurs joegen op de Spanjaard, maar Sainz gaf geen kik.

In zijn spiegels zag hij dat Russell er alles aan deed om Norris in te halen. In de laatste ronde toucheerde Norris de muur en Russell deed dat dunnetjes over. De Mercedes-coureur schoof de muur in en Sainz greep de zege. De vreugde was groot, hij was de man die de Red Bulls had verslagen. Hij was de reuzendoder, maar ook niet meer dan dat.

Wie een blik werpt op de cijfers ziet namelijk dat Sainz werd verslagen door zijn Ferrari-teamgenoot Leclerc. Elf keer was de Monegask de beste Ferrari-coureur in de race en vijftien keer werd Sainz verslagen in de kwalificatie. Leclerc stond daarnaast ook twee keer zoveel op het podium en hij pakte zes WK-punten meer dan Sainz.

Pech

Maar Sainz kwam wel in de buurt. Zijn achterstand valt ook te verklaren door een flinke portie pech in het slot van het seizoen. In Las Vegas werd zijn weekend geruïneerd door een loszittend frame van een putdeksel. Op The Strip knalde Sainz over het putdeksel heen waardoor zijn auto volledig was verwoest.

De schade was immens groot en Ferrari moest een berg onderdelen vervangen. Tot hun verbazing kregen ze een gridstraf van de stewards. Ze hadden het maximum overschreden bij één onderdeel en er bestaat geen regel bij overmacht.

Ook in Abu Dhabi ging het mis voor Sainz. Een crash in de training zorgde voor nog meer schade. Hij kon zijn vorm niet meer terugvinden en hij sloot zijn seizoen vol frustratie af. Toch gaat hij de geschiedenisboekjes in als de man die Red Bull wist te verslaan in het succesjaar 2023.

  Carlos Sainz eindigde in 2019 maar liefst vier keer in de top vijf en vierde dit meer dan eens door het refrein van 'Smooth Operator' van Sade, te zingen voor zijn engineer Tom Stallard.
  
  Het lied werd een doorlopende grap elke keer als Sainz een goed resultaat behaalde en was razend populair op social media en JoepTjoep.
  Nu heeft de coureur uitgelegd hoe het allemaal begonnen is. ''Ik hoorde dat nummer heel vaak op de radio tijdens het raceweekend in Engeland,'' vertelde Sainz. ''Blijkbaar is het een beroemd nummer. Na de race in Hongarije zong ik het liedje over de boordradio zonder te weten wat een smooth operator was.
  Mijn team legde me daarna uit wat het was en ik dacht dat het grappig zou zijn om mezelf zo te noemen. Daarom begon ik een beetje die grap om me heen te creëren.''
  
  Sainz is zich er zelf ook van bewust dat zijn zangkunsten over de boordradio een behoorlijke cult aan fans heeft gekregen op het internet en leest zelfs de reacties onder youtube-filmpjes over zijn smooth operator-momenten. '
  'Ja dat is echt heel grappig'' vervolgt de Spanjaard. ''Ik heb ze bekeken en er zitten een paar hilarische reacties tussen. Mensen reageren: 'we zijn hier vanwege Carlos' en die reactie heeft dan 1000 likes. dat is mooi om te zien,'' aldus Sainz.
