Tien jaar geleden: het ski-ongeluk van Michael Schumacher

Vandaag is het precies tien jaar geleden dat Michael Schumacher zwaargewond raakte bij een ski-ongeval in de Franse Alpen. Het nieuws schokte de wereld en de autosportwereld was in shock. Hoe het nu gaat met Schumacher is niet duidelijk, maar hij zal voor altijd een legende blijven.

Op 29 december 2013 domineerde Schumacher de journaals. Tijdens een skitochtje met zijn zoon Mick ging het helemaal mis. Schumacher ging een stukje offpiste toen hij viel. Hij raakte een steen met zijn hoofd en alhoewel hij een helm droeg, was hij zwaargewond. Schumacher werd naar het ziekenhuis gebracht en hij werd geopereerd. Hij lag in een coma en het was niet duidelijk hoe het met hem ging.

Privacy

In 2014 ontwaakte Schumacher uit zijn coma en in juni van dat jaar werd hij overgebracht naar een ziekenhuis in Zwitserland. In september verliet hij het ziekenhuis en werd hij naar huis gebracht, ook daar staat hij onder medische begeleiding. Hoe het precies met hem gaat, is nooit duidelijk geworden, zijn familie en vrienden beschermen zijn privacy.

Heel soms komt er iets naar buiten over de gezondheid van Schumacher. Zijn familie ontkent veel verhalen, Schumachers privacy blijft topprioriteit. In de afgelopen maanden lieten zijn broer Ralf en zijn voormalige teambaas Jean Todt nog wel wat los over hem, maar ze benadrukten vooral dat ze de oude Schumacher missen.

Geruchten

In de afgelopen jaren verscheen Schumachers naam regelmatig in de media. Vaak gaat het dan over zijn prestaties, zijn auto’s of zijn gezondheid. Een Duits tijdschrift raakte in opspraak nadat ze een ‘interview’ met Schumacher publiceerde. Heel Duitsland stond op zijn kop, maar het bleek om een experimentje met AI te gaan. Het was een smakeloze actie waarvan iedereen schande sprak.

Schumachers familie wil met rust worden gelaten en dat is heel begrijpelijk. Het is beter om het nu vooral te hebben over de ongekende prestaties van Schumacher in de racerij. Zeven keer werd hij wereldkampioen, hij won 91 races en hij bezorgde Ferrari definitief een iconische status.

Legende

Schumacher startte 306 Grands Prix en tussen zijn eerste en laatste race zat meer dan twintig (!) jaar. Na zijn afscheid in 2006 keerde hij in 2010 terug bij het team van Mercedes. In 2012 stopte hij definitief met racen. In zijn loopbaan vocht hij met meerdere generaties coureurs.

In zijn eerste jaren vocht hij met legendes als Ayrton Senna en Alain Prost. Daarna volgden duels met Mika Häkkinen, Damon Hill en Jacques Villeneuve. Hij vocht ook nog met Kimi Räikkönen en Fernando Alonso. In zijn Mercedes-tijd deelde hij de baan met Sebastian Vettel en Lewis Hamilton. Meerdere generaties vochten met Schumacher, hij was een inspiratiebron voor velen. Niemand weet hoe het nu met Schumacher gaat, maar het allerbelangrijkste is dat hij met rust wordt gelaten. Hij verdient zijn privacy, maar vooral respect. Michael Schumacher zal altijd een legende zijn.

  Je zou hem niet meer herkennen. De Michael van toen bestaat niet meer. Het verlangen naar een teken van leven is langzamerhand omgeslagen in een 'laat maar zitten'.
