Red Bull waarschuwt concurrentie voor kopieergedrag

Het team van Red Bull Racing was afgelopen jaar extreem dominant in de Formule 1. Ze kozen voor een compleet ander design dan de concurrentie en dat bezorgde ze veel successen. Andere teams kopieerden een aantal van de innovaties van Red Bull, Pierre Waché stelt dat de concurrenten zich moeten afvragen waarom ze dit doen.

Red Bull was in 2023 oppermachtig in de Formule 1. Ze wonnen slechts één Grand Prix niet en Max Verstappen werd op een overtuigende wijze wereldkampioen. Wat verder opviel, was dat de bolide van Red Bull er heel anders uitzag dan de andere auto's. Veel teams namen uiteindelijk het design van de sidepods over van Red Bull, maar op het gebied van de ophanging is dat nog niet gebeurd.

Waarom?

Alleen McLaren rijdt momenteel rond met een vergelijkbare ophanging. Het is nog maar de vraag of andere teams Red Bull op dit gebied gaan kopiëren. Technisch directeur Pierre Waché wordt door Motorsport.com gevraagd of dit überhaupt wel kan: "Ik denk dat het wel mogelijk is. Maar zoals in iedere business geldt, en zeker in technische bedrijfstakken, is het vooral de vraag van hoe je het gaat doen. Maar het gaat in deze situatie vooral om de waarom-vraag."

Begrijpen

Waché denkt dat het vooral heel belangrijk is om die laatste vraag te beantwoorden. Als andere teams ervoor kiezen om dit te kopiëren, dan is het belangrijk dat ze weten wat de bedoeling is. Waché gaat verder met zijn uitleg: "Als je de waarom-vraag niet kunt beantwoorden, dan kun je kopiëren wat je wil, maar het is beter om te blijven doen wat je volledig begrijpt. Zelf kopiëren we ook wel eens dingetjes en we laten ons ook wel eens inspireren door wat we bij andere teams zien."

Exact. McLaren lijkt inmiddels goed te begrijpen hoe hun pakket werkt en hebben de goede dingen gedaan. Helaas waren ze nog niet klaar aan het begin van het seizoen, maar ze hebben een enorme inhaalslag gemaakt.
Bij Mercedes daarentegen leken ze erg zoekende te zijn en hun concept nog niet goed te begrijpen. Daarom verwacht ik dat ze, als ze met een geheel nieuwe auto en nieuw concept komen, ook niet vanaf het begin zullen begrijpen hoe alles precies werkt.
