Vowles weet het zeker: "Albon kan wereldkampioen worden"

Alexander Albon beleefde vorig jaar een goed seizoen in de Formule 1. De Thaise coureur bezorgde zijn team Williams veel punten en daar waren ze tevreden mee. Teambaas James Vowles is onder de indruk, hij stelt zelfs dat Albon het in zich heeft om wereldkampioen te worden.

Albon rijdt sinds 2022 voor het team van Williams. Na een lastige periode bij Red Bull liet Albon in dienst van de Britse renstal zien tot wat hij in staat is. De Thai kende vorig jaar een zeer goed seizoen waarin hij veel WK-punten pakte en waarin hij ook veel goede kwalificaties kende. Het leverde hem veel complimenten en aandacht op. Aangezien zijn Williams-contract na dit seizoen afloopt, kan hij een grote rol gaan spelen op de rijdersmarkt.

Zelfvertrouwen

Williams-teambaas James Vowles is enorm onder de indruk van Albon. Vowles is trots en hij ziet dat Albon een flinke verandering heeft doorgemaakt. In een interview met Auto, Motor und Sport legt Vowles het uit: "De Alex die je vandaag de dag ziet is een andere Alex dan bij Red Bull en aan het begin van het seizoen. Hij had toen nog steeds weinig vertrouwen. Dat heeft hij nu wel. Hij is vrolijk, hij is een leider, hij heeft zelfvertrouwen en hij werkt heel gestructureerd."

Wereldkampioen

Vowles geeft wel eerlijk toe dat dit allemaal nogal makkelijk klinkt. De Brit weet dat je pas echt kan zien hoe goed een coureur is, als je hem vergelijkt met iemand in dezelfde auto. Toch denkt hij dat Albon nog veel beter kan: "Ik weet nu van Alex dat hij altijd het beste uit de auto kan halen. Elke keer als je hem onder druk zet, kan hij dat aan. Hij kan omgaan met een auto die lastig te besturen is. Deze ervaringen kunnen een voordeel voor hem zijn. Ik denk zeker dat Alex de skills heeft om wereldkampioen te worden."

Dat geloof ik ook wel, maar niet bij Red Bull zolang Verstappen daar ook rijdt.
Albon heeft duidelijk zijn meerdere moeten erkennen in Verstappen en is daar zelf ook best eerlijk en open in. Ondanks zijn goede ontwikkeling, verwacht ik niet dat hij Verstappen kan bedreigen bij hetzelfde team. Maar als hij bij een ander team zou zitten met een betere auto dan de Red Bull, ja, dan zou het kunnen.
Maar dat geldt voor vrijwel de hele grid.

  @Raikan, Albon zijn kansen zijn afhankelijk van de concurrentie. En Max is toch wel de maatstaf daarin. Snappie?

Alles kan, maar ik ga er m’n geld niet op inzetten.
Albon is zeker F1 waardig, maar kampioen zie ik hem niet worden. Vraag mij af of hij überhaupt ooit nog voor een topteam zal rijden. Dat is wel een vereiste om kampioen te kunnen worden.

Albon is zeker niet slecht en afgelopen jaar heeft hij mooie dingen laten zien.
Echter, de situatie zou wellicht anders zijn als hij afgelopen jaar ineens een Norris, Alonso of iemand anders van top-categorie als teamgenoot had. Dan ga je weer op je limiet zitten wat kans op foutjes vergroot, meer stress, meer alles. Dan heb je pas een soort echte-druk i.p.v. een "Sargeant-druk"

Maar goed, zoals de realiteit nu is - is Albon zeker een titel-kanshebber als Williams een snel(st)e/dominante auto heeft gebouwd. Maar dit geld voor minstens de helft van huidige coureurs.

Albon is in mijn ogen een soort Button. Die is uiteindelijk ook wereld kampioen geworden. Dat was echter niet gebeurd zonder de uitzonderlijke situatie waarin hij zat met Brown GP.

Zolang concurrenten echter een competitieve wagen hebben, gaat Albon geen WK worden.
