Corruptieschandaal Singapore heeft geen invloed op Grand Prix

Singapore wordt momenteel beheerst door een groot corruptieschandaal. De minister van Transport is namelijk aangeklaagd in een corruptiezaak. Hij zou zijn omgekocht door zakenman Ong Beng Seng, een van de mensen achter de Grand Prix. Volgens het ministerie heeft dit echter geen nadelige gevolgen voor de Grand Prix.

Ong Beng Seng speelde een grote rol bij het realiseren van de nachtrace in Singapore. Hij was betrokken bij het project dat voor het eerst neerstreek in Singapore in 2008. Nu is Beng Seng echter in de problemen gekomen omdat hij minister Iswaran zou hebben omgekocht. Het zou onder meer gaan om vluchten met het vliegtuig van de zakenman, maar ook om tickets voor de Grand Prix.

Het is een grote zaak in Singapore omdat het land er juist alles aan doet om corruptie te voorkomen. Maar men geeft aan dat dit geen gevolgen gaat hebben voor de Grand Prix. Ondanks dat Beng Seng een belangrijke rol speelt bij de race en hij dus ook tickets zou hebben weggeven, is de race niet in gevaar. Het ministerie laat in een statement aan Motorsport.com weten dat de Formule 1-contracten niets te maken hebben met de zaak. Ze verzekeren dat de race dit jaar en in de toekomst gewoon doorgaat. De organisatie beschikt over een contract tot en met 2028.
