Sainz senior schrijft Dakar Rally op zijn naam

Carlos Sainz senior heeft vandaag de prestigieuze Dakar Rally op zijn naam geschreven. De Spaanse rallylegende presteerde het beste tijdens de rally die in de afgelopen weken in Saoedi-Arabië werd verreden. Hij wist aanvallen van andere grote rallynamen af te slaan.

Sainz en zijn navigator Lucas Cruz kende een zeer stabiele rally. In het adembenemende Saoedische landschap kenden ze amper problemen en bleef hun elektrische Audi-bolide ook nog eens heel. De concurrentie was moordend, want er stonden veel grote namen aan de start. Dakar-legende Nasser Al-Attiyah had hoge verwachtingen van zijn Prodrive Hunter en voorafgaand de rally liet hij weten dat de Audi's sowieso tegen problemen zouden aanlopen.

Frustratie

De woorden van Al-Attiyah kwamen echter als een soort boemerang terug in zijn gezicht. De Qatarees was namelijk de man met de grote problemen. Zijn Hunter kreeg meerdere keren te maken met grote technische problemen waardoor hij uiteindelijk gefrustreerd moest opgeven. Audi-coureurs Stephane Peterhansel en Mattias Ekström kregen ook problemen, waardoor er amper tegenstanders overbleven voor Sainz.

Toekomst

In de laatste week van de rally was er nog maar één tegenstander over: Sebastien Loeb. De Franse rallylegende deed er alles aan om het gat dicht te rijden, maar gisteren raakte zijn Hunter beschadigd. Hierdoor kwam de zege van Sainz vandaag in de laatste etappe niet meer in gevaar. De Spanjaard kon rustig aan doen en hij werd bij de finish opgewacht door zijn zoon, en Ferrari-coureur, Carlos Sainz junior. Of Sainz zijn titel volgend jaar gaat verdedigen, is nog onduidelijk. Audi stopt met de Dakar Rally, maar Dacia gaat wel meedoen.

  @Snailer, zijn prestatie was uiteraard goed, daar had ik het niet over, maar dat was die van Loeb ook en die had ik het gewoon meer gegund, omdat ik dat een veel leuker persoon vind, dat mag toch?

  Fan zijn heeft natuurlijk alles met voorkeuren van doen. Ik ken ze alle twee niet. Loeb en senior. Mij maakt het niet uit. Ik heb overigens helemaal niets gevolgd van dakar. Wist niet eens dat de twee meededen. Maar dakar blijft wel een sport voor de ruigsten. Als daar iemand wint is het zelden gestolen.

  gunde het persoonlijk Al-Attiyah het meest, maar wie hem ook wint daar heb ik bewondering voor. Vind trouwens die vrachtwagens er zo spectaculair uit zien zoals die rijden, toch apart dat die klasse maar in een paar landen populair is...

"Wat ik zo waardeer aan Carlos is dat hij zich altijd blijft verbeteren", wordt Sainz senior geciteerd door Autosprint. "Hij is nog jong, maar heeft al veel ervaring. Ik denk dat hij op dit moment op zijn best is, zelfs gezien zijn leeftijd. Er zijn coureurs die op een bepaald punt stoppen met groeien, maar hij slaagt erin om elk jaar vooruitgang te boeken."

Ferrari eindigde vorig jaar op de derde plek in het constructeurskampioenschap. De Scuderia wil natuurlijk aankomend seizoen proberen om Red Bull Racing van de troon te stoten. Sainz junior heeft al laten zien dat hij Charles Leclerc kan verslaan, dus de ogen van zijn vader zijn gericht op Ferrari.
"Ik heb vertrouwen in het feit dat Ferrari in staat zal zijn de ontbrekende stap te zetten. De auto van 2024 moet beter zijn dan de SF-23. Er moet een sprong voorwaarts gemaakt worden", aldus Sainz senior.
