Sainz apetrots op Dakar-zege vader: "Vroeg hem thuis te blijven"

Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz reisde gisteren af naar Saoedi-Arabië om een klein feestje te vieren. Zijn vader schreef namelijk de prestigieuze Dakar Rally om zijn naam. Sainz senior gaf zijn zoon een dikke knuffel en de trotse Ferrari-coureur gaf aan dat hij eigenlijk niet wilde dat zijn vader zou deelnemen aan de rally.

In de afgelopen twee weken werd de legendarische Dakar Rally verreden in Saoedi-Arabië. In de Saoedische woestijn vond er een zware slijtageslag plaats waarbij veel topcoureurs moesten opgeven. Sainz senior kende echter amper problemen en hij sloot de rally in zijn Audi winnend af. Zijn zoon meldde zich aan de finishlijn om hem te ontvangen, de Ferrari-coureur was apetrots op zijn vader.

Sainz geeft aan dat hij eigenlijk wilde dat zijn vader gewoon thuis was gebleven. De ervaren rallyrijder bleef bij zijn plannen staan en dat betaalde zich dus uit. Trots legt Sainz junior aan Motorsport.com uit hoe hij naar de rally had gekeken: "Ik heb hem elke dag gevraagd om niet deel te nemen aan de Dakar Rally. Het is echter een endurancerace en hij vindt racen gewoon heel erg leuk. Hij had deze race heel erg veel te winnen en hij was slimmer dan de rest. Hij heeft de race gemanaged op een manier zoals alleen hij dat kan."

    [vervolg] Aan de finish was Sainz jr. ook direct lovend over de prestaties van zijn vader. Hij ziet in de overwinning een goed voorbeeld voor zijn Formule 1-seizoen.
    "2024 is voor de familie Sainz goed begonnen, nu moeten ze dit voortzetten", lachte de eenmalig Grand Prix-winnaar.
    Hij zag aan de finish ook de trots in de ogen van zijn vader. "Je kan je niet voorstellen hoe trots hij is als vader, als man. Hij zag al zijn vrienden en iedereen die hem altijd aanmoedigen."

    Waarom wordt Sainz sr maar 4x dakar winnaar genoemd? In 2008 won hij toch ook? Het was toen wel van locatie verhuisd, maar de edities door peru etc zijn ook niet ouderwets "Dakar"

    Voor mij heeft hij er 5, bij 4 verschillende merken.

      De FIA is alvast aan het oefenen met afpakken van titels uit 2008 in verband met een andere zaak uit dat jaar. Iets met een klein Braziliaans opdondertje en een Braziliaans ereburgertje...

      2008 is officieel afgeblazen, er zijn daarna wel rallys georganiseerd onder de naam dakar series.
